Ok. So I am not technical about comuters but have just got a new 1080 monitor. My computer isn't bad, except the graphics card is ancient. I don't play games or anything but my card won't support 1080.

Therefore.

I dont know what I need to buy to make my screen look as it should, running windows 7 pro and got a 3ghz dual core something 4gb ram, an AMD motherboard.

If any more info is available I will be able to find out.

Basically, don't want to / need to spend much, decent card which will support 1080 and play videos with VGA and HDMI.

Any help from all you wise guys will help my ignorance..

cheers

Jon

Depends how much you want to pay. An Ati 5750 or a 9800GT will be more than sufficient and won't cost the earth and should playing a game take your fancy they're still capable of shifting polys but you won't get full eye candy at 1080.

Ok thanks, is there any issues with compatability between motherboards and cards etc? Would there be much difference between say, the 512mb and the 1gb 5750 for £20?

Cheers, that looks pretty good probably worth the extra as I will use it for graphic modelling and autocad. My computer was a prebuilt one (about 3 years ago) but have been able to upgrade most bits (motherboard, ram, processor, software) so not sure about the PSU, can't imagine it will be much of a powerhouse, anything numbers (output) I should be looking for on it?

Try and find out what make the PSU is. There usually is a sticker on the side or top telling you the make and specs of it. Make sure you have a 6 pin connector like this:

Or two free molex connecters, the card will come with an adapter.

I don't have any of those 6 pin ones but do have 4 of the 4 pin molex ones, so it should work with an adapter??
Just got the 1gb 5770 from OC hope fully my life will now be complete.

Out of interest what is the difference between all the different name of the same card:Sapphire, MSI, HIS etc??

Warranty period, price, additional items in the box (cables, adaptors, games etc), possibly different coolers and maybe different clock speeds. Most are pretty much the same tbh.

Unless you are really into blueray playback, just buy the cheapest passive (no fan to make noise and get clogged after 5 years) on ocuk's website with a HDMI out.

Something like this

As long as it play films well and other stuff, I don't play fancy games so don't need any of that wizardary. Is still 1gb and has the dx11 which seems to be popular, I presume it just works a bit slower than the new ones.

Cheers guys, great help

These cards use next to nothing at idle and since that's what you card is going to be doing most of the time (you should have got the HD5670/50 in all honesty) your PSU should be able to cope with it.
