At the moment I have a 4850 and I'm thinking of upgrading to a 6850, would it be much of an improvement?
I'd like to spend as little as possible and I dont really mind having to lower settings down a little. Will the 6850 be ok for future releases etc?

It would be an improvement but you're barely skipping a gen as the 6850 is actually slower than the 5850 of the previous gen, i'd skip the 68XX series and go for a 6950 as it will future proof you graphically for at least a couple of years imo.
