Brother is looking to replace his X-Fire 3870's... his got a budget of £100.00 - £150.00... haven't kept up to date on GPU's so what is the best card in that range at the moment?

I am looking to replace my dual 4870x2's can I get anything for less than £350.00 that is going to give better performance? They are water cooled at the moment so a side step for less noise / heat really isn't an option.

Cheers

For £100 to £150... I reckon your best bets are these cards:

MSI HAWK AMD 6870 OC 1GB

£144 in this weeks specials

For a bit more...

Asus nVidia 560

£152

regarding your 2 4870x2 (is that quadfire?) it all depends on what you want, are you finding any issues with quadfire? You could alwats "downgrade" to 2 6950s unlocked ... for around £380...

I'd go with a 6870 over a 5870, believe it or not, simply because I think that it'll pull its weight a lot more in future titles that rely more on DX11-specific features. That MSI'd be a good choice at the moment for that price.

As for your own rig, I'd probably say 2x6950 1GB. The 2GB would last you longer, but they cost a fair chunk more.

Get two 6870s for £260-270.

These will be generally faster than 4870x2s in CrossfireX (no, really), almost perfect scaling in many games, MUCH less heat, noise and significantly lesser power draw.

Failing that, get two 6950s (2GB reference designs) and unlock them, they will beat your current setup out of the water. The cost may be an issue though, unlockable cards would cost you £390.

A single 4870x2 is around as fast as the 5870 at stock, quadfire scaling is usually terrible and 6870s, even though slightly slower on its own than the 5870, in Crossfire should easily be faster and have so many benefits over a quadfire rig.

Radeon 6870s CF = Radeon 5870s CF, lesser power draw, heat and noise would sway me towards the newer cards.

6870 is shorter and has lower power requirements over the 5870, other than that it is a little slower. Not a huge difference, so take other things into consideration.

As for your rig, I agree with the poster who said wait.

Cheers everyone

I'll probably save my money and wait till 28nm if I am not going to see a real a noticeable difference in performance I can wait a little longer... just got that upgrade bug!

I'll have a look at the 5870 / 6870's for the little brother..

Don't we all, mate. :D But yeah, if you're okay with waiting for a while, the new cards coming out after summer should be pretty nice. If nothing else, the current cards will see a fierce pricedrop. :)
