Only got it a few days ago and was working fine - today I added a new fan and since then it crashes after 5 - 10 minutes of any game. Either the game crashes or the PC restarts.

Temps are fine and I have removed the new fan but no change.

I thought poss the PSU but the 980 replaced a 680 and they have similar power reqs - this is the EVGA 2 x 6 pin version of the 980.

The PSU is 650w.

Any ideas?

Have you tried repairing Windows? Is it Windows 10? I had to re-install Windows 8.1, worth a shot. If it isn't that then I think it might be the PSU. An intermittent problem with a video card is usually software based from what you're describing, but a dodgy PSU would cause restarts etc. too.

Thought I had fixed it be reseating the card - was stable for an hour but then just blue screened again.

If it worked before adding the new fan then it cant' be windows or the PSU. Did you knock anything when adding the fan?

Nope have checked - WhoCrashed suggests Nvidia driver issue - but I have rolled back / forward and remove the unnecessary stuff and still happening:

Conclusion
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

8 crash dumps have been found and analyzed. A third party driver has been identified to be causing system crashes on your computer. It is strongly suggested that you check for updates for these drivers on their company websites. Click on the links below to search with Google for updates for these drivers:

nvlddmkm.sys (NVIDIA Windows Kernel Mode Driver, Version 355.82 , NVIDIA Corporation)

If no updates for these drivers are available, try searching with Google on the names of these drivers in combination with the errors that have been reported for these drivers. Include the brand and model name of your computer as well in the query. This often yields interesting results from discussions on the web by users who have been experiencing similar problems.

Read the topic general suggestions for troubleshooting system crashes for more information.

Note that it's not always possible to state with certainty whether a reported driver is responsible for crashing your system or that the root cause is in another module. Nonetheless it's suggested you look for updates for the products that these drivers belong to and regularly visit Windows update or enable automatic updates for Windows. In case a piece of malfunctioning hardware is causing trouble, a search with Google on the bug check errors together with the model name and brand of your computer may help you investigate this further.

Hi, have you already tried to clean out the old files with a third party tool like driver fusion to make sure software is fine? Are you able to test the card in another system? This is mostly the most simple way to get to know if there is a fault with the card or with the system... Sometimes it is just bad luck, you change something, errors occur but it is in no relation... which 3D application do you use that crash when under load?

If you have an old gpu or integrated gpu try running that for a while to check if it's something else rather than the 980. Random crashes can also be system memory problems so test that with memtest86 or remove one stick at a time and test game stability.
