After waiting two weeks for a certain music shop to get their act together and deliver my order, I unpack it at work this morning and it's got a flippin' great crack in it (pics later).

.. so it's decision time - the shop is trying to get an ETA from the supplier for a replacement but it's looking like at least a week. So my dilemma is, do I wait for a replacement or get something different.

The guitar in question is an ESP DV8-R Dave Mustaine V:

.. and I'm considering changing to an Ibanez S2170FB:

or S2170FW:

Opinions, please? I'm expecting the non-metal brigade to plump for the Ibanez and I'd love another one to go with my RG550 but it only has 22 frets and I'm not sure the pups will have a high enough output for some serious rocking? I do really like the finish of the FW but I've seen some that have some really pants-looking grain on it, looked like leopard spots from a distance..

Seem like you've enough quitars of the same type. What were your reasons for getting the V in the first place? Are they still not valid?
We were given a tasty bonus at work and I wanted to invest some of it in some new gear (already bought a Mode 4 half-stack).

I decided to look for a non-super strat model, my current guitars both do their jobs admirably so I wanted something that sounded/looked a little different. I was seriously considering a Les Paul but it's not quite in fitting with my style of playing, and when I came across the spec of the DV8-R I was pretty much sold - mahogany body, 24 frets, no trem (didn't want a third floater!), decent-output pups.

Pictures of the damage, the crack runs from the front scratchplate round to the back by the pot cover:

Yes, the 8-ball inlay does look pretty cool though:

.. and shown with my DXMG for size (it's huge!):

They are going to send out a replacement asap, so I'm leaving the damaged one in the box until they come to collect it.

I looked at the RGA series, but I wanted maximum bang-per-buck (I had a budget of £800) so wanted to get what I could :) Part of the reason for the V was it is fixed bridge, I get plenty enough tweaking time from my others (both the RG550 and DXMG are floating trem).

As you say, 24 frets is pretty much a must and the mahogany body was something I was looking to get for the sound and sustain. I've had a bit of a play on the damaged one, albeit unplugged and it has a real nice action and a fast neck.. can't wait to get a usable one to put through it's paces!
