could anyone advise with a problem i have brought a hitachi deskstar sata 11 hard drive to install but i am running an ide hard drive at moment how do i get all my operating system and settings and files etc to new hard drive.could i do it with an external hard drive.also ive made a slight booboo as my board only supports sata1 will it still run ok, would i also be better to run it on its own or with another as raid
i would appreciate any help

I use Acronis, done this with my laptop and desktop.
Use this for backing up as well.
I think they do a 30 day trial.

Edit: Check the harddrive it may have a jumper to limit it to SATA 1 speeds, but that may depend on how fussy your motherboard is.

hello rjc when you used acronis where did you store hard drive contents for transfer
because it says my computor needs 2 hard drives but i want to save contents then remove old hd and reboot with new one

The way I did this was installed my new hard drive, used Acronis to format when this
was complete I used clone disc option, Acronis will ask a few questions read these in full
as one question asks if the destination disc will be bootable (can't remember the right term) once
you have excepted Acronis will reboot and start tranfering you data once this complete shut down
your pc remove your old hd go into the BIOS to check your new hd is the first boot device.

Hopefully I have explained ok :)

I have managed to do that (RAID 0 TO Single disc then back to RAID 0) by using an
external disc and the Acronis boot CD.
I suspect you will need to create the RAID array first then do the cloning as windows
should see the RAID array as storage.

Alternate is make a backup of your old hard disc, setup your new array install
windows then restore the backup.

ok top stuff its making sense now how did you create the acronis boot cd
how do i go about getting the raid array created i have read about creating differant arrays an array for peformance or a security array plus stiping or mirroring im guessing striping is better with a security array

Creating the boot disc, there a menu option in Acronis.

In creating the raid array you only got to options RAID 0 were the data is
spread across both discs this should give you improved performance, I
have not noticed that much of a performance gain going from single to
raid 0, raid 1 will give you secuity if one disc fails you can still run, for
raid 0 + 1 you will need 3 discs I beleive (rpstewart seems to know a lot
regards arrays.

Creating a array you will need to enable the option in the bios reboot,
once you got passed the memory test ect you should see a option to
press ctrl I to choose the disc's you want, this is what happens on my
Abit IP35 Pro & DFI Infinity 975x I am unshore regards you motherboard
you will need to read the instruction manual.
