Here is the scenario, my pc has a 250gb hard drive i have just bought a samsung F1 500gb how do i quickly and more importantly securely transfer everything inc operating system to my new hard drive as i dont want to re install everything , like bf2 game with patches ect and wow all those endless patches. to then have the 500gb as my primary drive i have backed up my photos to dvd but want to keep them on my pc also i have seen a few programs but not sure which one to use i have vista 64 and nero 8 if either of them are any use

cheers

just read this in the faqs on arcronis migrate easy

What are the default settings for transferring partitions from an old hard disk drive to a new larger hard disk drive in the automatic transfer mode?

In the automatic mode partitions are transferred from an old hard disk drive to a new one with proportional increase in size. Hence, even if the old hard disk drive was much smaller than the new one, there is no unallocated space on the new hard disk drive after transfer (if there was no unallocated space on the old disk).

does this mean when i copy my full 250gb hard drive to my new 500gb hard drive there will be no space left surely this defeats the object of the excersize and is true image better

It'll proportionally increase the size, which might mean it will increase it to the full 500GB. If it doesn't, you can just create another partition with the rest of the space that is left, or "extend" the partition with windows disk manager.

I would use the manual option that lets you change the size of the partition. That way you can either set it to use all the 500GB as one partition, or if you want (which I prefer), set the OS partition to about 75-100GB if you can (depending how large the current partition is), and make the rest a seperate partition for storage.

Nope, I just find its a good size for me as I can have lots of apps and games installed! Besides if I want to format I only need to format the windows partition and not all my music/tv recordings (as they are on the larger, seperate partition).

Your signature is a bit on the large size, it can be 4 lines maximum.
