Hey guys,

I'm trying to install a new hard disk on my Mum's computer but XP doesn't appear to want to play ball!

HD's are set to boot first, then CD/DVD second and I get the usual, 'Please wait while your hardware is inspected' message etc, but then all I get is the blue screen (not bsod) with Windows Setup at the top and nothing else seems to happen? Isn’t there usually a grey bar at the bottom that shows the progress of driver installation? The optical drives (tried both) also appear to just stop and there's no HD movement.

I'm using an XP sp3 slipstreamed disc which I made at Christmas for my laptop, and that installed fine. My original XP disc is sp2 and I was hoping to avoid using that. Maybe that's what I'll try next :(

Any ideas?

Thanks,

SW.

Right, I'm thinking it's the new hard disk... not wanting to write the temporary files :(

Time to dig out a (test) spare!

Nope. Still doesn't want to know. I downloaded a wd utility program and formatted/partitioned the drive so I know its okay? Plus I tried out an old 12 GB drive and although the system recognises the drive, I can still only get as far as the first blue screen with 'Windows Setup' then nothing :(

It's been about 4 years since I last had to install windows on this machine, but I know it didn't cause me this much bother...

Try disconnecting the HDD and booting off the CD, you should still get into the first couple of menus before it kicks up a stink about no drive.

Failing that, Id say your CD is the problem. Just use the original, SP3 doesnt take that long to install.

Ha. Sorted it!

It was..................

..................... the crappy front of case usb header i fitted a couple of years back  :D

Disconnected that and it went straight into installation next boot.

Hopefully someone else can take something from this experience, because I've more or less spent the whole evening trying to sort this one out

Cheers.
