Just starting to get back into PC gaming after a 18month or so break. Thanks to a new 24"widescreen.
My PC is a little long in the tooth. Only running a 7800GT on a P4 3.0gig HT. with 2gigs of ram
However my old crop of games, which consists of BF2, AOE3, CIV4 and CS Source all run perfectly smooth even in 1900 x 1200 with everything on.
Other newer titles such as COD4, BIOSHOCK and even the older titles such as COD2 and Q4 run dire, espeically compared to their console conterparts. I need at least a constant 60fps in a game if I'm to bother with it.
I've held back from spending out on my pc since the consoles have provided enough play, especially considering the only small time I get to dedicate to gaming these days.
But I'm thinking, should I bother just upgrading to a 8800GT? I can't really go for the entire upgrade right now. Not just to play a couple of games that I already have on my consoles. Besides which the missus would flip if she noticed too much spending going on..
Would it really be worth my while moving to a 8800GT on a single core P4 3.0HT?
You see I could get away with a small expentiture like this.. But would it be enough to attract me back into the newer games such as COD4 and BIOSHOCK.. Providing they could maintain 60fps at 1900 x 1200 on a 8800GT with AAx4 and AFx16 then I'd go for it.. Or would my cpu limit me too much being a single core..
Also how much improvement is there to gaming using a duo ? I mean they still only run 3:00ghz, how much of the 2nd core do the newer games make use of.. And what about the older games, do they make any use of the dual core whatsoever?
The older games are enough to keep me into pc gaming for now.. I will eventually go for the whole upgrade, but being that I've just shelled out for a new 24inch widescreen and a 2nd PS3, there's only so much the missus will agree too before blowing a fuse.
