New hardware

I'm thinking of an upgrading my graphics card. I'm currently on a 7800 gtx, looking at going to an 8800GT. Is there any hardware coming soon that is going to be so earth shatteringly good that I should wait for it, or shall I just go ahead and get it now?

My budget is just under £200 so obviously I wouldn't be able to get the new hardware, it's more the fact that it will push old hardware down in price.

I use a res of 1440x990 on an 19" widescreen tft, so what would you reccommend for my budget of around 200? (A specific model would be much appreciated:))

Thanks.

8800GT (3 year warrenty) (with a new cooler + fan if you want is just under £200 in total) should beat any new card for that price for a while, the 9800 cards will be release apparently in February but the GTX equivalent will probably cost £400, if thats the first card released.
This is all speculation tho as Nvidia and ATI dont post details of upcoming cards while there trying to sell there current gen cards.

Ill say again I got the GTS 512 for £200 (209 with what turned out the be next day delivery) because it came with a dual slot cooler.

Thanks for the replies guys, couple of questions:

1. When does the "this week only" offer end (because I cant order anything til Monday)? **edit - just seen it's wednesday to wednesday**
2. How much better is the gtx over the gt? (I know this is a very vague question but a rough explanation would be nice!)
3. What kind of performance increase can be gained by a decent fan and some overclocking, and is it just as easy as overclocking a cpu or is it more difficult/risky?

Thanks again.

I've come up with a shortlist:

- OcUK GeForce 8800 GT 512MB - 600/1800 - £170
- EVGA GeForce 8800 GT 512MB Superclocked - 650/1900 - £193
- Gainward BLISS GeForce 8800 GTS 512MB - 650/1940 - £217 (this week only)
- OcUK GeForce 8800 GTX 768MB - 575/1800 - £234 (this week only)

I've also found a POV 8800GTS 512MB 650/2000 for £216

Am i right in thinking that the size of it (i.e. 512 or 768) is more to do with what resolution you play at, and because i only play at 1440x990 I'd be better off with a quicker GT/GTS?

Any opinions on the above?

I'd go for the GTX but then I have a higher than 1080p resolution on my CRT. At your resolution the GTS would be fine. It's your money and both cards would be great for you so happy choosing :).
