I will be getting 2 new hdds today 1TB Hitachi`s
I have a dual boot with Vista 64 and XP 32,both on separate physical hdds
Am planning to use 1 hdd for Vista(probably partitioned smaller)
My question is can i boot into xp copy all the files from my vista hdd(system files etc.)onto new hdd.
then swap old hdd for new and expect it to work(both xp and vista?)
or will i have to reinstall vista,if possible don`t want to reinstall as i just rebuilt vista last week :(

You could use Acronis True image to create an image of your existing installation and then copy that to your new HDD. You will not be able to just copy the files across. There is a trial of Acronis but I don't know if it is fully functional.

Cheers for the reply.I have got a copy of Ghost somewhere might use that or by the sounds of it it will be quicker to install a fresh copy ,not much has been installed since last week

Don`t know if the version of Ghost will run on vista 64,think i could take an image of the vista 64 install in xp?

thats the best way to use imaging software, when the system isn't live

acronis boot cd is the way to do it

I'd recommend Acronis Migrate Easy 7.0, I recently used it to copy everything from a 40Gig HDD over to a 160Gig drive and everything went perfectly, you just need to connect the new drive on different channel install Migrate Easy 7.0 on your old drive and it easy from there on in.

It's a fairly cheap bit of software only £24 not a lot compared to two Hitachi 1TB drives.

doggo

Thanks for all the advice etc;)
in the end i used norton ghost and cloned the vista hdd to the new larger partition on one of the 1tb drives
then it said such and such file missing i thought ********
but fed it the vista dvd and hit repair....Bingo all working fine now:D
