new hdd how to format? winxp

hi i have a usb hdd attached running winxp it has said hardware is ready to use etc but i cant see the hdd anywhere other than through device manager.

what program can i use to format the hdd so i can see it etc.

Go to disk management in admin tools (control panel). You should see the disk there. You may have to initialise the disk and then format.
