Im more of a reader than a poster so have not posted on this site much, hope im going about this the right way.

I searched all the related posts up till about 3 months ago but nothing seems to relate enough to help with my decision, for the last year or so ive been using the Creative fatal1ty gaming headset and although it was alright i was disappointed with the flimsy build and bad mic/audio quality and it recently had a accidental run in with my hoover :P , so now im looking for a replacement bt plan to spend a bit more this time as im going to uni next year and my 5.1 speakers will be staying home so need a good replacement for music/gaming and general use budget is around £60 but will stretch if needed.

gone through so many threads some advising to avoid headsets with a ten foot pole and others saying they are better, so i come to you seeking advice form all your experience

Thankyou,

Serraph: the kave's have been mentioned in many threads but i have not read anything yet that has justified the price and have read a few threads saying to avoid usb connections due to noise and how there mostly bad quality as the audio is being created by the usb bus ?

Kona: I read through the thread earlier and while it contains a lot of information its based on the Op budget of £150 so most of the suggestions unfortunately fall way out of my range ;( the one headset the thread is based on cost more than half what my new graphics card did XD

I'm in a similar boat to you, after my trusty Senn HD201s have finally died (it appears that my step-dad doesn't understand that running them over with a vacuum cleaner doesn't do them any good). Budget is basically the same, although about £10 less for me (so £50) and am pairing mine up with the Xonar DG. Primary use is split between gaming / music / VoIP - don't really need a mic though as I've got a Logitech 3.5mm desktop one anyway.

The Roccat Kaves only use the USB for amplifier that is built into them, they connect with normal 3.5mm connections to a sound card or onboard 5.1

I have them and to be honest the build quality is good and they are robust and I find them comfy and can easily game for hours with them.

On the down side the 5.1 once enabled with my Asus d1 doesn't quite work how I would like in games, there is like an echo, but using them as normal headphones seems to work well.

I am thinking about another set my self and without being able to try on it is very difficult decision

EDIT, just looked on overclockers and found these

definatly look worth a punt and if they get good reviews think they will be my next set

i have no sound card and use my onboard audio :
. Realtek ALC888 codec
. 2/4/5.1/7.1-channel

in the megaladon thread a link to a review article covered many of the headsets i was considering with the r Razer Carcharias being the highest rated
so i suppose it comes down to :
Razer Carcharias
Logitech G35
Corsair HS1A (not released till the 30th)
Roccat kave

thanks for all the adivce so far its certainly helpful in making the decision needed.

Roccat Kaves are fantastic, very deep bass. They are slightly large but the quality of sound produced is fantastic. Microphone is crystal clear and the build is very strong. Had a pair for about half a year now.

Logitech G35's are also another of my favourites, they sit comfortably on the head and are not as chunky as the Kaves. They have a dolby digital toggle switch which produces fantastic virtual 7.1 s/s. Microphone is also of top quality with red light mute switch. These are also on offer until tomorrow morning at the cheapest price in the UK.

The original HS1's were a huge sucess for Corsair, their new headset really showed great prospect however more people were asking for an analogue version, which the HS1A are and should do well. I will keep everyone updated on information :)

I have not tried the Carcharias to compare with the rest of these but im sure a lot of people have their own opinions to go along.

thanks for sharing your experience Valkia why would they charge £20 less for audio over usb ?

less parts? less hasle getting them to work?

i will be getting a set of them over my roccat kaves, just cannot get the roccats to sound right in 5.1

so one person likes the kaves someone else doesnt :/ not sure whether i should wait for the corsairs, take advantage of the g35 offer or get the Razer Carcharias , a lot of money to spend tho :/

it could be user error on my part with the 5.1 on the Roccats, I have tried and treid with them but cannot get them to sound right in bfbc2
I have been messing with them the last couple of days and I can now get them rumbling when I am in or near a heli, or an explosion goes off near by, but I cannot get rid of the echo

It's not the Kaves!!! I know what the problem is though.. Asus in their infinite wisdom decided to force a delay on the center and rear channels on all the Xonar products. Take a look at the drivers here for the fix:

Yes this is true as I have the Roccat Kave's and an Asus Xonar DG soundcard. The above link does fix this. Also, if you try plugging them into the onboard sound with RealTek you will notice the problem is gone also. This is not a fault of the Kave's.

The Roccat Kave's does have USB, but that is for power, like most high quality headsets, and like hyperst said, perhaps for the amplifier that is built into them as well.
They do connect with normal 3.5mm connections, one for Microphone, Front/Headphone, Side and Centre/Sub.

Not trying to persuade or anything (although they are great), just thought I would clear that up.

oh my, it worked, thank you two very much, I now have 5.1 in game without the horrible echo sound:)

I installed the c-media panel (GX enabled) and also tick the ASIO 1.0 patch and tick the enable stereo upmix option, it seems to work fine, but is this the correct ones?
should mention the first time I tried installing I left it at default Normal option and it didn't install and I had to restart windows by pressing reset

Glad to hear it worked. Im not sure what exactly are best, but when I did it I just went down the list, so I tried 'Normal' first, which didnt work, then I tried 'Low Latency', and this fixed it, so I didnt try the others. I might have another play around though.
