Hey guys,

I am about to start building my second computer, I am using it for general use, graphic design, games like Planetside 2, BF3, Arma 2 and any future games along those lines, I would like it to run at at least 60FPS at high and up settings on a 1920 1200 screen.

The components I have lined up right now are:
NZXT Phantom 410
Asus RoG Maximus 5 Formula
Intel Core i5-3570K @stock clock
Corsair Vengeance 8GB 1600MHz
EVGA GTX 670
OCZ 600w Modular PSU
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD
Seagate Barracuda 2TB
Creative X-Fi Fatal1ty PRO

Do you think that these components are up to standard for future proofing, though I will make minor upgrades along the way.

Finally, does anyone have any experience with BF3 and PlanetSide 2 among other games whilst running on Windows 8 / 8Pro, as I don't really want to go back to Windows 7 purely because of games.

Thanks for any help.

Depends what you mean by future proofing. The socket is soon to be replaced by Haswell, no more chips will be released.

How heavy is your graphic design & what is your budget?

Depending on the answer of the above, this may be better suited:

YOUR BASKET
1 x Intel Core i7-3820 3.60GHz (Sandybridge-E) Socket LGA2011 Processor - Retail £249.95
1 x Gigabyte X79-UD3 Intel X79 (Socket 2011) DDR3 Motherboard £179.99
1 x Patriot Intel Extreme Masters 16GB (4x4GB) DDR3 PC3-17000C11 2133MHz Quad Channel Kit (PVI316G213C1QK) £79.99
1 x XFX Pro 550W Core Edition '80 Plus Bronze' Power Supply £54.98
Total : £576.91 (includes shipping : £10.00).

The 2011 socket has Ivy-E to be released in Q3 of 2013 which is rumoured to have more 6/8 core CPU's available. The 2133 quad channel RAM will help with the graphics design.
PSU is the best in the market, made by the best, cannot go wrong with XFX.

Sorry about not giving enough info:

Budget ~£1300
Graphics work: A-Level AutoCad, SolidWorks kinda stuff
Gaming: Regularly
Why RoG Mobo: Had great experience in the past with Asus motherboards, enjoy the shear amount of I/O potential with them
Why GTX 670: Regular gaming, Vsync 60FPS, high spec games, great value for money, and excellent performance whilst in Sli

I would prefer a modular PSU, and if possible a non-gigabyte mobo, had very bad experience with them in the past, so...

When I mean future proofing, I wish to get best bang for buck now, so that I will be content with the specs that I have for the rest of the year into the latter half of next year.
Is it really necessary for the 3820 for my purposes, as I understand it that for gaming and graphic design of my level (i.e., not that high) a 3570k will suffice.

Also, would you by chance know as to whether a Phantom 410 could support a Extended ATX mobo, as the size difference is minimal???

can't fit in o/s in budget, or sound card of choice either :( o/s can go win8 pro or home trial for 30 days to see if you like it etc, then just buy the key, but will be over budget

gone for a i5 with your choice of m/b (one reason budget was max tbh) kept the samsung in but dropped the black to green with WD
m/b supports supper fast ram so went for it but with only 8gb, can always add more later, went amd for card as faster and loads cheaper, you won't get your choice in budget unless you alter m/b sdd choices etc, and stayed with your choice of case as well

option 2

1 x Asus HD 7950 DirectCU II TOP V2 3072MB GDDR5 PCI-Express Graphics Card with Crysis 3 & Bioshock PC Games £263.99

1 x Microsoft Windows 8 64-Bit DVD - OEM (WN7-00403) £79.99
1 x Western Digital Caviar Green 2TB SATA 6Gb/s 64MB Cache - OEM (WD20EARX) HDD £79.99

1 x Corsair Hydro H60 V2 High Performance Liquid CPU Cooler (Socket LGA2011 / 1366 / 1155 / 1156 / 775 / AM2 / AM3) £59.99
1 x LG GH24NS95 24x DVD±RW SATA ReWriter (Black) - OEM £18.98
Total : £1,302.35 (includes shipping : £13.75).

as my rule of thumb goes more is better than faster, i have altered the ram speed but added more, dropped the 256gb samsung and gone for a 128gb plextor one for o/s only and for caching the hdd for apps and games. added windows 8 home 64bit

What do you mean you cannot get an OS in there? He's spending £1300??

Change the case, mobo & graphics card for cheaper versions and you've already made a saving! :D

As well as having 2 sets of RAM in each build.

under budget and a nice build as always hono, but not the ROG board he wants or case either.

and im sure it was you who said about the oem cpu's not having the warranty etc, bus yes that was when they was same price, now the jump in price i'd still go for 3 years myself and pay the extra, but it does make the price different

Yes the OEM has a shorter warranty (CPU failure is rare to be fair) and no stock cooler but it's a £40 saving and that goes a long way to pay for a good heatsink to overclock.

He doesn't want a GB mobo, this MSI has onboard wifi and bluetooth and comes with some extra goodies. He mentioned the 670 for SLI but you want 750W minimum for that option to be a reality. I've used the 7950 as it's better bang for buck especially with the free games.

Case is a personal preference, he can use whatever he wants. The Plextor Pro is a rival to the 840 Pro, a firmware update will improve the speeds. 16GB of RAM at a good price (hence being out of stock currently), these Viper kits overclock well and arent stupidly tall so they fit under most "hardcore coolers"

Each to their own, that's my take for the budget any who

+1 for Hono's spec. Really like that MSI board I have to say.

The 670 would be a waste of cash, if your doing the level of CAD work im doing then you won't see any improvement ;)

The only thing I would change is getting 7950's which vent air out of the back (reference style) like the HIS Q editions so if he went x-fire he wouldn't have as much heat issues.

Thanks for the input.

I already have versions of 64bit Windows 8 and 7, through the software4students scheme.

I love the look of that MSI board, especially the fact that there are a resounding superior number of USB 3.0 ports. Though, when compared to the Maximus V Formula, which one is better, as I can get a huge discount off of the motherboard through a separate website. I think the final decider will be if the eATX will fit in the Phantom 410 case, as I am certainly decided on that front.

RAM wise, would there be a visible difference in performance using that higher speed RAM and is there any point in getting the 16GB for my purposes.

On the 670 vs 7950 front, is there CURRENTLY a difference in performance due to drivers as I am extremely hesitant to go for the AMD card as I have heard a lot of bad things about the drivers

Thanks again

amd have some of the best drivers now, and if your going crossfire won't have the problems that still plague sli in many games.

and the cards quoted are not only a lot cheaper but in every test you can find faster as well

ram is game dependant, speed well it does help the cpu using faster ram, but unless benchmarking you won't tell the difference either from slowest to fastest, but saying that, with board selected why not go for it, as you could say same with your choice of board as well, most won't either use it or tell the difference with a cheaper one.

and i'd remove the other website b4 someone does it for you :)

enjoy your pc which ever way you go, and good luck

Asus RoG Maximus 5 Formula,

Asus Z77 Maximus V Formula Intel Z77 etc

great board, but unless you use the features it offers, it's no better than a cheaper one for £150 less

Ok guys, thanks for all the input.
The build I am going to go for I think will be:
NZXT Phantom 410
MSI MPOWER Z77
Intel Core i5-3570k
Sapphire Radeon HD 7950 Vapor-x -- or -- MSI Twin Frozr III Radeon HD 7950 (HELP ON THIS FRONT PLEASE)
Samsung 840 Pro 256GB SSD*
Seagate Barracuda 2TB HDD
OCZ ModXstream 600W PSU**
SoundBlaster Recon 3D Fatal1ty Champion
Corsair Dominator Platinum 8GB 1866MHz
Samsung 24x DVD

I don't plan on overclocking the CPU, so probably won't get another CPU cooler until a bit later down the line.

*Because have had stunning experience with this in the past
**Due to the price and the modular capacity

Thanks for the input,

Merachon
