New home has an existing switch set up... faulty?

Hi I'm pretty clueless with networks and internet connectivity so this will hopefully be a bit of a learning experience, basically I have just bought a house and what comes with it is a HP ProCurve 1810G-24 Switch j9450a...I had no clue what this was when I moved in until I googled it. Now from what I understand you can do a lot of smart things with it to do with internet and networking but mainly it helps send out internet signals via ethernet to all around the house.

Here's the problem I ordered virgin and replaced their homehub 2 with homehub 3 and connected it to the switch like the last one and almost everything has worked fine apart from the wired sockets. I've trial 2 out of 4 ports downstairs and 2 out of 2 ports upstairs. 1 port worked downstairs and all the other ports won't connect and says unidentified network...I've played around a bit and reset the switch to factory settings but I don't really know what I'm doing. My guess is the port downstairs which does work is the only one connected straight to virgin's superhub. What I'd like to do is connect the superhub to the switch and connect all the household ports to the switch and have all the ports capable of gaining internet access via ethernet. Can anybody help me? And where should I start? Thanks.

Test the internal wiring a port at a time by connecting them directly to the Virgin hub.

Worry about the switch once you know the wiring is okay.

Have you tried logging into the switch?

If all else fails an unmanaged 8 port Gigabit switch is £20 or less.

I think I've actually figured it out! I plugged the virgin into the switch, (I thought I had previously but apparently not) and then tested all the downstairs ports and all were working! I then tried upstairs but to no avail and then spotted that the upstairs ports are cat 5 and I've been trying a cat 6 cable. So I guess all I need to do is get a new cat 5 cable. :)

You're right, it seems I'm able to connect to my laptop via ethernet cable upstairs but when I try to connect it to my pc I get unidentified network which leads me to believe its either a software or hardware issue with the pc.

Could you show an ipconfig /all of the PC that isn't working?

To do this open command prompt, enter the command "ipconfig /all" (without quotation marks) and then copy the contents to here. Might help us work out what's going on with your PC's network status.

I think I've solved it (touch wood). I went through a windows diagnostic and windows found that DHCP was not enabled for 'Ethernet' apparently so yeah I've just done a speed test and all does seem to be working, thank you very much for your help.

I figured that might have been it, would've shown up on ipconfig. Glad to hear you sorted it.

It's simple to explain to them. They can at bare minimum ask their electrician to run and label the cables.

It was the sales assistant (Whom we were having problems with anyway). She kept thinking I was asking for more power sockets. I gave up in the end.
It didn't change much although it would have made my life a load easier.

"Can I speak to someone else please" :D
