Here is the spec of my new server for home-office/internet-server use . . .

Hardware

Asus P5WD2E-Premium
Pentium D 965 Extreme 3.2Ghz
2Gb PC8500 RAM
2 x WD RE3 1TB HDD in RAID1
PCI SATA RAID CARD
blah blah air-cooled blah blah CDROM blah blah Floppy etc etc blah blah
GBit LAN TBA soon

(its basically a mish-mash of stuff I have lying around from old builds)

Software

Windows XP - already have this
Cardbox - subscription only
Nod 32 - subscription only
KF WebServer - free download

Useage

The server will be used (as our current one is) for all our office data and as a backup for main business data that is stored on my home office PC RAID1 Array

We use a database called Cardbox which is a client-server affair over the internet - been using it (in various forms) since 1993 - it requires the use of a permanently attached to the internet machine using open ports attached to the program - we also use a fixed IP address and the server is also used to download copies of documents that are hotlinked directly from the database as web-addresses.

Carbox also does an automatic backup for me to a separate HDD on the machine everyday at 12 noon at the moment.

I have decided to RAID1 the boot drive this time as the machine needs to be up and running all the time 24/7 and any outages are a real ball ache for our business - my business partner and my wifes business are all using cardbox to store database files.

Very Simple really - we use KFWeb Server for the document bit and a bit of webpage hosting.

In the future I am thinking of also using the 1TB of available space as our home music/media server as I am a Music Nut (FLAC) with about 200Gb of music currently + photographs etc

khushy

Does anyone have any tips before I start installing WXP as to how best to set the machine up etc etc
