New Home server

Help to spec upgrading rig

Hello,

Im looking to replace and upgrage my existing home file server. Ill keep the current HDD's and case (can take a full ATX Board) but looking to replace the following bits -
-Motherboard
-CPU (preferably i3)
-Ram
-Maybe the PSU (my current PSU only has a 4 Pin for the CPU so only replace if necessary)

I currently have -
ASRock 775 G31M-GS R2.0 Motherboard
Intel® Core™2 Duo Processor E6400(2M Cache, 2.13 GHz)
ACE 500W BR PSU
4Gb 332.5Mhz DDR2 Dual Channel RAM
1x 2Tb 7200RPM Samsung Spinpoint F1
3x 1Tb 7200RPM WD Green
1x 320Gb 5400RPM Seagate Barracuda (System)
Windows Home server 2011

It was all build out of old bits i had from 2 old rigs so is a bit old and slow.

Im looking to spend around £200 but if its unrealistic what price would i be looking at?
The only real requirement is at least 4 on board SATA ports, and 2 PCI and 1 PCI-E

Any help would be great

Thanks,

What is the difference between boards that have a 4 pin connector for the CPU and those with 8 pin?

Ive seen many boards that only need 4 pin for a i3.

such as ASUS P8H61-MX USB3 Motherboard with INTEL Core i3 3220 3.3Ghz Processor only needs 4 pin. is it all down to the Haswell and newest CPUs needing more power?

Majority of systems can get away with 4 pin connectors, like the i3. Unless your into extreme overclocking then 8 pin power helps, but a majority will connect this for convenience.

so with the Gigabyte B85M-HD3 you sugested, would i be able to use a 4 pin for the CPU? the PSU i have, although not a great brand, it pretty much brand new as i had a corsair that that burt out a few months ago.

If i can get away with keeping my current PSU it would be for the best.

its mainly a media/file server, i need to upgrade it because frankly its just to slow. When you add a file to a media share, it can take up to and hour for it to appear and be accessible to other devices

If all it's there for is to serve files to your network then I'd probably replace the whole lot with a 4 bay Synology box and save on the electricity bills / space.

I had thought about that. But I want to keep it as a full PC. Gives me the option to have more drives in it and space isn't an issue as it's all tucked away in a corner in my loft. It runs lights out and is never on 24/7 just use WOL when I need it.

Can a mother board with a 8pin CPU power connection work with a psi that only has a 4 pin output for the CPU?
