Its a bit weird but the whole loft room has mesh running through the walls, under the floor and covering the door.

The previous owner said it was used as his office and he used to build servers. I was wondering why this would need a faraday cage or was it really made to keep the aliens away?

Im taking the door frame and maybe wall out to open things up a bit, just wondering if anyone else has anyone else come across this in their travels before?

I'd check under all the floorboards, the garden and then inform the police as to what/who you find.

Is the house prone to lightning strikes? Does it have a thatched roof?

Wow! Only thing I can think of would be paranoia of emp blasts but that material wouldn't be of any use.

Some kind of extreme grounding?

Maybe he worked for one of the agencies and used it to protect from wireless snooping.

(we really need a tin foil hat emoticon)

Wire mesh is used to hold rock wool insulation. Should a fire destroy the ceiling below the insulation remains in place and provides fire protection.

I have seen it used in walls for the same reason.

Good answer, but that doesn't explain why its on the back of the door

Also in the bit above the door which has no structural benefit, i took the bit of plasterboard out and it just fell off.

Also on the door it had these metal L brackets which matched up to some other L brackets on the door frame. It looks like they were all joined once the door was closed. To keep these brackets secure they each have 4 screws in each of them, 4!

Did there appear to be a screw hole or anchor point? You know for chains and stuff :D.

Maybe it was to prevent gps chips from giving away the location of his prisoner who he was torturing for information. Run a black light over the room :D

Serious note other that what shine has said above I cannot fathom any logical reason.

He was almost certainly trying to build a time machine, that's the only slightly logical reason I can think of.

That room would be crap for keeping a person captive and a faraday cage would serve no purpose whatsoever.
