Socket 1156:

If you install the ram into slots 1 and 3 of the board and leave 2 and 4 empty your board will not post.

Ram must be inserted into slots 2 and 4 FIRST.

Socket 1366:

If you install the ram into slots 1, 3 and 5 of the board and leave 2, 4 and 6 empty your board will not post.

Ram must be inserted into slots 2, 4 and 6 FIRST.

read the manual? its a man thing, we dont need to read manuals we are instant experts in everything we do :D

i found out the hard way with my i5 build :D 3 hours of hair tearing later i caved in and read the mobo manual :p

3 hours before thinking about moving ram? i wouldn't necessarily call it a man thing
 
It really winds me up when people say "its a guy thing" not to look at manuals. A lot of useful info in them, I always, always check which DIMMs should be populated first. Have seen it be different across Gigabyte boards and Asus boards - saves a lot of hassle spending 20 seconds checking beforehand.
