New i5 3500 with MSI H61-M22 build just beeps 4 times

So I bought a new CPU (i5 3550) a mobo (MSI h61M-P22 (B3)) and ram (Kingston 8 gig kit, 1333mhz, unbuffered NON ECC cl9).
I know the PSU and the HDD works as they are from my old build which I used today.

Problem: when I power this new build up it starts the fans and makes four beeps and does not go into bios or show any picture. It shuts itself down after that and tries to power on again and again, same beeps.
I tried to take out all the ram and change them around, didn't change anything.

Note: I was a bit afraid when I installed the CPU as pushing down the lever actually made a bit of a sound and made the metal latch create small marks on both sides of the CPU... really bit into the sides of the CPU (the part that is not in contact with the heatsink). That's normal??? I read some youtube comments from people who seemed to have experience the same thing with LGA1155 (but their computers actually worked).

If my mobo follows this one it's "System timer failure":

What's that?

The guy in the computer store told me that he wasn't sure if my mobo supports the cpu or if a bios upate is needed (and said the computer might not display a picture). But what the heck, I can't update a bios without a picture can I? And well, would it not at least boot if the CPU wasn't fully supported?

But what's your best guesses? Is it a cpu, mobo or memory problem or something else? Should I just return the mobo?

Thank you for any guesses!

The lovely crunching sounds from the lever on the socket and the marks on the CPU are perfectly normal.

But maybe pull the CPU back out to see if theres any bent pins?

Have you plugged the extra 4/8pin ATX connector near the CPU socket?

Are you using a GFX card? if you are, remove it and plug directly into the board?

Try a clearCMOS.

Lastly it could very well be that you do indeed need a BIOS update, take it back and see if they will do this for you? (would possibly need a Sandybridge chip to do this)

Yes 4 pin near cpu is plugged in.

I'm using the graphics port on the mobo.

I tried to touch the cmos pins with my screwdriver and didn't help.

Mhh so I might need an older CPU to be able to update the bios? It's a fairly big shop so it's not likely they'd help me for free at least.

mm that supports the idea that a bios update is what is missing?

Thanks for your quick and good answers by the way, I appreciate it :)

For your information (or rather if somebody else searches for this and finds this thread): It did work after a bios update!

I'm sort of disappointed though that MSI didn't mention that the new Bios update is NECESSARY for ivybridge, they just say "MSI recommend you to update BIOS with ME8 only if you are using IvyBridge 22nm CPU."
RECOMMEND huh!
Well that cost me 15€ in service costs but well at least it's running and all that now.:)

Also am I just stupid or... on the specs page it says:
"- CPU x 1 / System x 2 FAN connectors"

Doesn't that imply 2 system fans and 1 cPU fans??
I'm disappointed I have to buy a connector for my PSU to plug my second system fan too!

Just had a look at a picture of the board.

• One CPU fan header
• One system fan header near the rear I/O
• One system fan header near the 24pin plug

Why do you need to buy a connector for your second system fan? or do you mean third?
