New i5 system won't post

I've just put together a new i5 system for a friend, only to find that when turned on the fans will just whirr once, then it restarts and does this over and over again until I switch it off. What could be causing this?

have you placed a standoff (little pillar) between the motherboard and the case at each screw hole? Also make sure there are no standoffs where there isn't a hole. system specs would be useful :-)

I double checked that one

I'll post specs in a minute, bare with, just noticed that I didn't plug in the 8-pin ATX_12V power connector, since there isn't one with the power supply :/ Can I get a molex to ATX-12V converter?

There should definitely be a CPU power cable; how old and what model is the PSU? If there isn't an 8-pin, there should be a 4-pin at least. But yes, you must plug in at least a four pin or it definitely will not work. I think you can probably get a molex-to-CPU power cable but tbh I wouldn't even use a PSU without a 4-pin at all.
