I have my new system up and running and now I just need to get a new graphics card. My old system has a Radeon 6850 2GB so whatever I get needs to be a upgrade from that.

My new system supports crossfire/sli and I have a good 850 PSU to support it but at the moment I am trying to decide what card to invest in before possibly adding a second later in the year.

Money wise, I am looking to pay around $400 max, possibly a bit more if it's worth it. I am in the USA at the moment, so I guess that works out at around 300 UK.

I am looking to play BF4 and most games at 1080p as that's the highest res my 27" monitor supports.

Any suggestions would be great.

A 280X is what you're looking at for that kind of money ($400 is around £240-250 according to Google) but from a quick look online there doesn't seem to be much stock around in the US. I suspect Gibbo has purchased the entire world's supply of 280Xs as well as most of the 290s.

When you say you're 'in the US at the moment', could you order the MSI 280X from OcUK, have it sent to a friend in the UK, and pick it up when you get back?

Not sure the wife would appreciate me flying back to the UK to pick up a graphics card, so that's a no on that :)

Is there any chance of the 280x/290s coming back down in price, or is this whole bit/litecoin thing going to last a lot longer?

If not a 280x/290 what lese would be worth considering, I don't mind paying extra but I do mind paying more money for something I know is going to drop back down to it's regular value in a few months etc. Are there any Nvidia equivalents of the 280x?

Women, eh? ;)

You could see if OcUK will ship to the US and how much it would cost.

The 770 would be the Nvidia equivalent. It is around the same price as the 280X (apart from the MSI one on offer) but the lower VRAM would get you lower performance in BF4, I suspect. For a bit more you could get a non-reference 290, but their supply is low too. And for a bit more than that (we're up to $500 or so by this point) you could get a non-reference 290 or a 780.

I don't see AMD cards coming down in price any time soon, unfortunately.

Have a look around some US sites and see what you can find in stock for what price.

Sorry to bump this but I have a few more questions.

So at the moment I am playing at 1080p and from what it sounds the r9 280x would be perfect for me. It looks like in the USA they are currently charging over $100 the retail value. They used to be sold for $325 and now they are sitting at around $450.

I have found a store that sells them for $330 but I am curious about a few things.

What brand should I go for, I see lots of different manufactures some with slightly different memory speeds etc. Are there any brands to look for or stay away from. For example I have found one by XFX that comes with BF4 for free which sounds ideal but I have no idea if XFX cards are any good.

My next question is about crossfire mode, do you need two cards from the same manufacturer or can you mix and match? I don't plan on using crossfire soon but it would be nice maybe in the future and I don't want to buy a obscure brand then have a hard time later trying to find another for crossfire.

You can mix and match brands, as well as cards with crossfire. You needn't worry about compatibility. Main reason for getting two of the same is looks in the system!
