Hi,
My requirements are mainly for a PC that can edit HD video files such as AVC HD. I would like it to be reasonably quiet. I will probably run it with Windows XP to start with and eventually upgrade to Windows 7 when it's out. I would appreciate it if you could check that what I have listed will go together mechanically and electronically. Are there any better choices on any of the components I have specified?

Theres nothing wrong with your setup, look sgood, but if you are wanting areas to improve then:

The UD5 boards are better
Id spend the extra on 6gig of RAM
and get a 1gig gfx card
the WD Caviar Greens are quieter than the sammys, but the sammy is still a good drive
If you can stretch to it, 24" seems to be the "standard" size now

Thanks for your comments. I did consider the UD5 but doing a search on the web I see a number of people have had problems with them like the LAN not working etc.
The reason I chose 3G of RAM is that that would be the max XP can support. I thought by the time W7 comes out and I decide on a 64 bit OS, the RAM prices might be less.
I wasn't sure if I would benefit having more than a 512M gfx card for HD editing.
 
Can't fault the setup apart from the RAM, which you've explained about already. The 512MB 4870 will be perfect if you're using it up to 1680X1050, if you're planning to game at 1920 then you should consider the 1GB version.
 
Looks like 1G graphics is the way to go then.

Looking at the 24" monitors, they seem to be mostly 1920 X 1200 rather than 1920 X 1080. The latter would give true 16:9 whereas I assume the 1920 X 1200 would have bands at the top and bottom of a 16:9 picture, unless scaled vertically which might give upleasant sampling effects?
 
Yeah theyd have the bands at top n bottom when watching movies etc, thing is most games/programs are written for 16:10, and these dont apply bands so some end up going a bit haywire, if youre not playing any games and its purely a media PC then stick to 16:9, else most people use 16:10 which is the standard for PC's

I'm still undecided on the monitor, any recommendations on a 24" one? I would prefer one which has hdmi and dvi connectors is possible.

Could you also tell me if the RAM I have chosen is OK speed wise with that mother board?

And lastly, are all the power cables likely to be long enough or will any need to be extended?

Will any extra fans be needed over and above what comes with the case?
 
RAM is definately fine speed wise
Cables should be fine, you've only got a midi case not a full tower so there wont be any issues there
Re extra fans Id recomend setting up your system and wait n see, see what sort of temps you get, so long as youre not clocking too massively you should be OK
Monitor wise whats your budget for this? Remember that if you invest in a decent one it will do you for multiple systems
 
Ive just got 3 samsung T260Hds and they are awesome mate you can use them for your needs, and cos they are HD also you dont get the black bars on it due to it being a proper monitor and a TV and the graphics are excellent. The blueray i have on it is outstanding to.
 
THREE of those? Wow!

I think that might be a bit big for my desktop.

Budget wise I was hoping to pick something up for less than £200. There seem to be several 22" at around the £150 mark. Prices for these things seem to be getting lower and lower.
