New iMac screen quality

What do people think? There's quite a bit of whinging on the web so far.

I saw the 20" and the 24" models in an Apple Store on Sunday, the 20" model did look washed out. Apparently this can be corrected by colour profiles but the screen has other problems.

The 24" display looked very nice and is apparently a higher quality panel, I was surprised it was on full brightness though because it wasn't overly bright, most monitors can be turned up so they're way too bright.

Upshot is I think I will have to save pennies for the 24" model! Either that or just get a Cinema display for my Mini and avoid the possible problems of the new glossy screens.

Do people actually pay the prices that Apple ask for those Cinema Displays? They look disgustingly expensive.

I've seen a few people buy them. I think you're paying for the design of the monitor more so than anything else - and to make it look pretty alongside your MacBook Pro or Mac Pro.

They do look quite nice it has to be said. But then again so would the money saved in your pocket. :)

I'm considering the 30" one, that or the Samsung 305T. The latter is obviously the better one, but also looks a tad bland design wise. They are the only two monitors in the running, as I don't want any junk Dell logo on my desk.

Paying a premium for Apple design - nothing new really.

ah you may say that about dell, but the product they do do nicely is their screens - they are well priced too.

personally i'd never pay what apple want for their screens, they are just the same as all others out there (maybe a bit prettier) but they do the same thing.

I don't dispute that, I just hate the Dell badge, and know I'd only regret not buying Apple if I had to look at it every day.

The Cinema displays are indeed expensive but in my mind they have this aura of quality design and spot on image quality with perfect colours etc.

In reality I bet a lot of TFT's are of comparable quality, but the dual Dell 17" TFT's on my desk at work are not, the picture is rubbish. Some gradient images on the website I'm working on are invisible

I do like the Apple Cinema displays, but it's known that the quality of them isn't perfect.

In fact, the Dell 2407 (that 24" jobbie) outperformed it in a few tests I've seen.

...that's just because Apple are still using old panels though, there's nothing to say they won't update them come October :)
