New imac

In january i will be purchasing the best IMAC you can buy, is the applecare plan worth it?

I wouldn't get a Mac without it... However saying that... I have only ever bought it with HE discount (and free this time although I was happy to pay with the HE discount).

The longer you have it the more likely things are to go wrong, so bare that in mind.

The HE store online says it's three years on hardware and one on telephone support, with an option to spend £50 to extend the phone support to three years. I think I should print out that screen.

Then you'd be a fool not to get it with the ~75% discount HE provides ;)

A fool I tell you!

It's a total waste if you are buying with the HE discount as all you get is phone support... and have you honestly used that at all? The 3 year parts and labour you get with HE online is more than enough alone.

I quite agree... although I have used the phone support (mainly during the first month of my first mac).

However if you are buying it in stores, I believe you have to buy Applecare to get the 3 year hardware support? (This is what they claim anyway!)

I may as well outline it:

  • Higher Education: comes with three year warranty, one year phone support. AppleCare merely extends phone support to three years.
  • Standard purchase: comes with one year warranty, 90 days phone support. AppleCare extends both to three years.
If you are purchasing outside of HE (which the OP isn't), AppleCare isn't really worth it IMO unless you are busy/don't have a store near by.

Otherwise, I'd say it is very much worth it.

However, my better suggestion would be to by from JL, and get a two year warranty included. That, and fight under SOGA when required (though for the ease you may want to buy AC - this is what I did).
