Just building new machine, got my windows XP disk, can't find any code

on my old machine my computer>properties is has a number XXXXX-OEM-XXXXXXX-XXXXX

before I rip out the HDD's to complete the install, is this the code number for windows for the new install??

cheers, Am

Nope, it's not. You can't do it- it's not legal. The OEM license which you have is not allowed to be transfered between PC's (or motherboards to be exact) as Microsoft deem a new motherboard as a new computer so you're gonna have to buy a new license. If you plan on upgrading a lot then I would suggest you buy a retail license as you can install this on any number of different configurations as long as it's not installed on more than one at the same time :)

Legally OEM xp disc is tied to your old machine.

You need to go out and buy a new copy and read the sticky above

hang on maybe I wasn't clear - I bought this OEM version from OCuK OEM couple years ago basically as a new OS to replace win2000. This is my next (ie second build) and thought i could transfer it to the machine as the old one getting trashed.... ??

Nope, the license dies with the motherboard you first installed it with and it's not transferable so it's new license time unfortunatley.

google for a program called..

magic jellybean
or
rockxp

they can both tell you what the serial being used for your current office + windows installs..

if the mothboard is 'broken' then ms will let you use it on a few one, you may have to phone them to activate (if its xp)

They will only do this if the motherboard is exactly the same as the old one and they will know this because the hardware hash will be significantly different. Telling them it's the same when it isn't is illegal and is breaking the terms set out in the EULA ;)

PsIfox - this one..

Microsoft Windows XP Professional Edition inc. SP2 - OEM - 1Pk (E85-04026) (OS-002-MS)

my mce box had a faulty motherboard, i changed from 64bit to my old 32bit athlon xp (the only things that are the same are the hard drive, dvdrw and case) and they let me activate again, you're allowed to do that, doesn't matter if its a different motherboard

no offering advice which would be deemed technically illegal
