hi
i`m thinking of basing my next system around one of the mb bundles from ocuk but all the Intel Core 2 DUO cpu`s
seem to go up to only 2.4ghz, and i just can`t get my head around how a 2.4 ghz Intel Core 2 DUO based system can be faster than my current northwood 3.4ghz system!
could some kind person please explain this to me?

Yes. It will absolutely DESTROY your current chip. It gets twice as much done per clock. The Clock speed is no longer the sole indicator of performance. The micro-architecture of these chips are just on a different level. Just get one. Or do as I did and buy a Pentium D 945 because it has a higher clock speed, get laughed at by most people on the forum! Then see the benchmarks and eventually sell the 945 for a conroe, losing money in the process.

Your choice :p

2.4 - 6600.

Even at this speed, No Pentium chip will touch it. Oh - do you overclock? if so then you are gonna love conroe :p Mine's on stock volts, and with the overclock, it thrashes X6800 chip (that's a £600 chip :D )

What beast said really. Clock speed was thrown out of the window afew years back, first by AMD with Athlon XP.

Also, don't forget that the C2D chips are Dual-Core

Compare chips here

Here you go, This will help you get your head around it! Just done this now, using sandra CPU benchmark:

Forstryder.jpg

Red - my chip (E6600), that's a very conservative o/clock using stock volts and air.

Orange - the top core 2 duo chip

Green - a stock E6600 @ 2.4ghz

Blue - a 3.8ghz Pentium 4

Purple - a 3.2 Pentium 4

I think this proves, Clock speed is no longer the sole factor when buying a chip. Factor in the fact that I see just over 50C cpu temp under load, and the fact it uses far less power, I think you'd have to say, P4 has had it's day :p

hi beast, i don`t overclock i just want to build a fast ,reliable system. to tell you the truth i have never been very impressed with my current set up so i`ve decided to start to build a new one and am just trying to find out the best gear to use in it. unfortunately i`m about 3 years behind in the latest technologies so this is going to mean lots and lots of questions on the forum, i hope they don`t get ****** off with me! :D

We've all been there mate! Didn't have a clue about conroe before November, I think I could write a Book on them now :D

To ensure they don't, don't ask questions which can be answered by simply Searching :)

May I ask what is your budget & intended use (i.e. gaming, video/audio encoding, etc)? We can spec you up something ;)

I can't wade through all of those :D

If you are not overclocking, I'd recommend the gigabyte GA965P-DS3 as it's on special for £80 at the moment and loves the conroe chips. Then I'd buy a E6600 as, keeping everything standard, it's the best value conroe chip. It's about £215 from OCUk last time I checked, so you're talking about £300 delivered all in. :)
Also, if you did fancy overclocking (and there's an easy to follow, comprehensive guide on the DS3 thread) then you have a good mobo and chip too!

not really sure on the whole system budget at the moment but i could probably run to the most expensive of the bundles. i wil be using the new system for system for just the usual day to day stuffbut i`m very into gaming and possibly video editing and that kind of stuff.
hope this helps!

thanks for that mate i`ll definitely be looking at that board and cpu! but what memory would you say would be good with this setup?

Again, if you are not overclocking, the geIL 6400 2x1gb is reasonably cheap and has good 4,4,4,12 timings. However if you do fancy an overclock, I'd say the Crucial tenth anniversary is your best bet.
