hi
i know this is probably a daft question but will the conroe cpus be faster and better than my current nothwood 3.4ghz? if so will the lower speeds they seem to have mean a significant reduction in heat?

Lower heat, and as intel have learnt clock speed is not everything... and yes the use 65nm process to make them, so they run a lot cooler

These will be the fastest consumer CPUs on the market, they're dual core and they don't let out a lot of heat.

So yes it will be better than in that respect.

In some tests it appears the 2meg cache, 1.86ghz Core2 Duo can outperform a 3.73Ghz Extreme Edition., the 2.4Ghz can outperform the P4-965 in virtually all tests, and also AMD's FX62 in some tests, not all, but quite a few. The 2.66 pretty much wipes the floor with the FX62, and the 2.93 Core 2 Extreme well nothing compares to it.

They are cool running, low power cpus, which can either use much smaller lighter heatsinks, or if you use a sink designed for the very hit prescott chips, the fan speeds can be reduced so much that you can have a very silent system.

Im still sitting on my 3.2Ghz Northwood. Im definalty looking forward to Conroe :), I love the improvements that many games seem to show in their minimum frame rates. Even games which show little improvement in their maximum frames, seem to show a good improvement in minimum frame rate..

I guess thats not so surprising, as maximum framerate is normally a GPU limitation, while minimum framerate is very often CPU overhead.

Yes. Yes.

Nitpicking point - they will be slower, but significantly more powerful.
