new Intel i5 and mobo. Windows install keeps saying 32bit version?

^^ title says it all. I installed a new Intel i5 and a gigabyte GA-P55 mobo.
Now that im doing a fresh windows install and specifically choosing x64 bit from the setup i keep getting a 32 bit installation.

This has me confused. Two cents greatly appreciated.

Since I have only used my MSDNAA version of Win7 I have never installed a store bought version. My Win7 was only 64bit so I didn't have a choice.

I thought a store bought copy had 2 disks, one for 32-bit the other for 64-bit. You choose the disk and away you go.
The OEM version only has either 32-bit or 64-bit so you need to buy the version you want to use. I think you may have the OEM version and you have a 32-bit only key.

Probably wrong, it's early and I've not had my coffee yet :p

thanks for your replies.

its definitely 64 bit version, i used the same disc to install it on my laptop and it is 64 bit. I definitely selected 64 bit from the setup and it still comes out 32..

Er an official disk has no method to select 32 or 64 bit, you have 2 separate disks depending on the install type. I thinks you have downloaded your disk from somewhere dodgey.

Hey,

As has been said before, retail windows comes with a 32 and a 64 bit disk. OEM is 32/64bit specific. Do tell me, does your windows magic disc also offer you which version you'd like to install? Because as far as I'm aware.... my windows disc only installs home premium, and the copy i got from msdnaa is a straight professional version...

A retail disc contains four versions, so if its a 64 bit disc it will have, basic/hp/pro and ultimate on it, all 64 bit, same is true of the 32 bit disc. I'm not entirely sure on oem but I would imagine its the same.
There's a file in the source folder of the disc called 'ei.cfg' after copying the contents of the disc to the hdd, you can simply delete the the file and burn windows to a disc, then you will have a 32 bit/ 64 bit disc that will give you an option on which version you want to install, and it will also accept both oem and retail keys.
I've just made a 64 bit disc so I can do a clean reinstall on a new dell laptop, but I made it into an iso and used microsoft usb tool so I can boot from it, quicker than installing from a disc.

Retail Windows 7 has 2 discs, 64bit and 32bit. The key determines during setup which copy it installs, i.e. home premium, ultimate etc. They're all on the same disc. I'd imagine that OEM has a single disc that is either 64 or 32bit, but again I believe the key can be used for both. The only 'magic' disc that had BOTH a 32bit and 64bit that I had seen was a copy was a pirated version with a custom bootloader. Certainly my retail home premium is a seperate disc for 64bit over 32bit...

I'd be interested to know why it is installing 32bit as you probably have the choice which path to proceed down from the bootloader.
