I currently have a Intel Core 2 Duo build which I'm going to give to my dad and then build myself a new machine. My current system has the following...

Motherboard: Asus P5K Deluxe
CPU: Intel Core 2 Duo E6850, 3GHz
GPU: NVidia Asus 7600GS (Silent Version)
Memory: Corsair 2x 1GB DDR2 XMS2

I don't do any gaming, but use my machine for general tasks as well as a media centre. I also do development work in Visual Studio 2008 and use Photoshop CS4 and the Adobe Suite regularly. Have also done some video encoding as well.

I was considering going with a i7 build, although now looking at the i5 processor that Intel has recently released, what do you lot think about this. My only main concern with this is that it has a clock speed of 2.66Ghz rather than the 3Ghz of my current one. Should this be a worry? The importance of my machine is that its near silent, and I currently have a Scythe Ninja Rev.b with a 120mm Scythe fan for the CPU. Is this something I can do with either the i5 or i7 CPU, or are there heat issues?

The build I am thinking of at the moment is...

Motherboard: Asus P7P55D Pro ~ £137.99
CPU: Intel Core i5 750, 2.66Ghz ~ £159.99
Memory: Corsair XMS3 4GB (2x2GB) DDR3 ~ £96.99

What do you lot think of this? Would I benefit with going to an i7 build and having Tri-Channel memory, as I would then be able to have 6GB memory for a similar price.

Thanks for your help smile.

i5 720 or 860 setups is really good for gaming

i920 is good for encoding 3d programs ect running apps

my last build was a i7 920 setup oc to 4.3ghz and was intended to be used for 3d modling and video encoding ect you will be good with a i7 920 for that

if you game a lot then look into the i5 860 chip from the benchmarks ect i have read it runs really well and beats it brother chips fairly well.

this of course ll comes down tho your budget and what you want to have,
