New Internals Advice

Hi all,

Going for an all out upgrade on the internals of my machine (Have antec 600 case already) so Mobo, CPU, GPU, RAM, Cooling.

Budgeting around the £700 mark and have settled on the following setup:

Intel i7 920, D0 SLEBJ S1366
6GB (3x2GB) Corsair XMS3, DDR3 PC3-12800
Gigabyte GA-X58A-UD3R Rev 2
1GB Gigabyte GTX 460 OC
Corsair H50-1 Hydro Series High-performance CPU Watercooler

Anything you guys/girls would change? Anyway to squeeze a bit extra punch for my pound?

Also I'm currently running a cheap 500W ******'s own PSU and figure I'll probably need an upgraded one (I'm thinking around the 750-850 mark). Any you can recommend? Does it need to be a decent brand? I dont really fancy paying that top dollar for it but if its a neccessity than so be it. Also i've heard of the new modular (i say new but I haven't built for a few years) PSU's. Is there any justification to get one over a non-modular?

Not sure who still has the 920 in stock but I guess you could try Ebay - there are a couple of good specials going right now for the 950 cpu that has been slashed to about the same price as the 930 (replaced the 920 in the Intel line up)

I have the same motherboard and it rocks - does everything I ask of it.

The main difference between modular and not - is two fold. First cable management is so much easier if it is modular. And secondly some would argue that the power delivery is cleaner without any extra connections in the way.

I have the same set up except I run a HD5870 graphic card and I am using a Corsair midrange PSU no problems. So I guess it all depends on your upgrade path when it comes to the size of your PSU

Enjoy the PC looks like it is going to be a pretty solid set up.

Re the new PSU, are you thinking about maybe adding a 2nd gfx card later? If so then yes 750W would be good idea, if not 500W is fine but youre right you should get a decent branded one rather than a generic one in case it blows, you odnt want to lose all your new components
Re Modular, modular means that you can plug the cables in/out so you only need to have the ones you need attached, versus non modular which just has all the cables attached permanently. If you dont have many devices connected this means your case can be much tidier as you dont need to try and hide/tuck away the excess cables, this also helps with good airflow
Corsair are one of best brands, though any of (branded) the ones stocked by OcUK are good to varying degrees
 
Thanks guys, pretty much sealed it for me then.

Reason I'm going for the 920 is ******* still have it in stock and its about £20-30 cheaper than the 930 (which Im told is basically a 920 with an extra multiplier and I can get similar results with an overclock all the way up to 3.5ish).

Got my mind made up on the 750W Corsair Non-Modular which is about £20 cheaper than the Modular version and I can live without the cable management for that. Thanks for the guidance, much apprecaited!
