New iPad Test results

You like what you see? They're identical to the iPad 2 benchmarks, just with more RAM. I'm indifferent about the results, it's annoying they've not made any upgrade to the CPU at all... But it's the GPU that matters with iOS, there's a load of hardware acceleration going on.

Meh, CPU and memory performance are identical to that of the iPad 2. Increased graphics performance for the new display is where it's at.

EDIT: Beaten to it!

Given the way iOS handles app switching etc, it's not like it probably needed more of a boost, and if they had to compromise on RAW POWAH! versus battery life, you can see why they wanted to keep it as good as the previous iPad. Ultimately as long as it's buttery smooth to use like the iPad 2 it's fine by me. The graphics are obviously the area that required boosting and that they've essentially doubled everything in that department and kept the thing able to run for as long as it does is quite an achivement. Some progress with battery tech would be welcome though, although iOS isn't crying out for quad core really is it.

To be honest, I don't think that many people care about the performance that much. It's about the user experience with a tablet, and the iPad runs fine, that's all that matters.

I wouldn't say the update is good or bad, it's...the update. It's exactly what it is. ;) :D

The iPad2 was fast enough already. What's the point in increasing the clock speed of the processor when all it'll do is eat the battery even faster? They had to boost the graphics side (in this case from dual to quad core) to drive four times the number of pixels.

It's always a balance between performance and battery life with mobile devices and Apple have got it just about right I think. They've expended a lot of effort optimising the OS for the hardware, both on the iPad and iPhone and this shows in the superior performance compared to competing hardware which has better paper specs.

I'm fine with it being on par with the iPad2. Let's face it, the display is what's going to shift this version - all they needed to do was avoid any major failures in other areas. I'm surprised the camera is (seemingly) as good as it is.

Next years will be the thinner/lighter/X times faster model.

As someone said in the comments, they've had to make some compromises, but they've improved the key areas with only the thickness (0.88mm) and weight taking a negative - not optimal but a very minor concession.

I can't believe they've kept the same front-facing camera from the iPad 2 though. :-/

So the new iPad definitely has 1Gb of RAM? This may prove handy for multitasking, as some apps are able to be used while in the background.
