New Ipod touch not syncing

Hi
I recently got a new ipod touch and it won't sync with itunes for me (it wont load my songs onto it),I had a ipod nano before this on it and that would sync fine.

any help appreciated

When I go to file and click on sync its says step 1 of 3,2of3,3of3 but no songs are loading onto the touch,does that make sense?

Is that in itunes itself? or is it on the actual ipod?
