New Job... in VR!

So, not "just" VR, but a major role of what I'm being asked to deliver.

I'm part of the core team starting a new research centre with the intention of trying to come up with out the box methods to fix the forensic crisis we face - where the lawyers, jury's and public have lost faith in the accuracy of forensic tests.

With 10 million in funding (what?!) we've been given a grant to "disrupt the current state of forensic science" and to innovate, engage and enlighten.

My role will be to build the technology around the scientists to help them intuitively understand the data they gather and come up with innovative solutions - using technology!

First task on the list, build a freakin' data (man) cave!

I'll be tasked with dealing with vendors, contracts and IT infrastructure to deliver a 4 sided, or spherical datacave in addition to putting together multiple physical VR environments where external teams can visualise their data.

While officially I start the job on the 1st of August, yesterday the Queen came to the University to open our centre where I got to meet the her and her hubby. When Phil (first name terms now) asked what I did I said:

"I do computers sir, and mainly I'll be playing with Virtual reality (insert smug grin here)"

To which he replied (to my boss) "And you plan on paying him for this?!"

Yes... yes they do... :D

As well as talking to the Queen, myself and the two directors presented to around 40 high profile movers and shakers that are interested in the research (like a judge on the queens council!) so not a bad first day!

Enough ranting for now I think, just happy to finally be telling people!

What a fantastic job, VR has so many applications outside of gaming. It's difficult to realise this until you have tried a Vive or Rift. Good luck with the new job.
