Hi there

I've just started a new job this week which is 40miles away from my home. so I'm currently doing 80miles a day and will be for the foreseeable future. This leads me to my question.

I currently own a 2000 306 1.8XS which can manage just about 30mpg, I'm thinking about selling it and maybe going for a diesel mondeo or focus. if needs be I have a budget of up to 6k to get something thats A: going to be comfortable and B: economical.

Do you think it would be a good idea to go that way, or just keep the 306. Also do you think leasing a car would be suitable to my situation? I'm not so sure.

Thanks for your time

tbh, i'd just keep your current car..

if it works and you're happy with it, just put some money aside for a rainy day imo :)

30mpg from a 1.8 306 is appalling.

I did 32mpg driving at ~80 in a 2.5 litre V6 Mitsubishi Galant last week.

Unless you're doing 90mph all the way, something is wrong. At a steady 70 you should be able to be hitting 40ish easily. I can get ~35mpg from the V6 at 70, or 38mpg if I do 60.

What you need is a brand new Fiesta, does 70mpg.

Can't even get 30mpg out of a 1.8 Pug, he's got no chance of getting that. Not even with a 90mph wind pushing him along :p

Driving anything smaller than a mondeo on a motorway will be like gauging your eyes out with forks every day.

Plus looking for long term savings by investing short term is ridiculous.

Keep what you've got or buy a £700 mondeo.

There is a fairly high possibility I have a heavy right foot, I will see how it goes after a service and me trying to be more conscious about my driving

I don't get why people say this??

Sure travelling mega miles in an old Polo or something might be a bit unpleasant, but I wouldn't have any issue doing 80 miles a day on the motorway in my Rover 200..

Edit: any more than I would in any other car :p
