Good prices for a great antivirus system. Not sure about the premium that PURE commands, not unless you're doing really dodgy stuff....

If I had one criticism it'd be that the menus are confusing, especially the firewall etc. If you're not a experienced PC user I'd set all the options to take default actions without prompts and just run a scan every fortnight or so.

At less than a tenner for the AV you should add this to your basket when getting a new PC. Personally I'd go for the internet security as I don't rate the windows firewall all that much (though it is improved in the latest versions of windows) but it isn't essential.

I d watch the internet secuirty package, the fourms state that some have ran into issues with it however kes are already on the case and a critcal update will be around soon.

very good price for top end protection

Can you be more specific about the issues? False positives seem to be a fairly common occurrence with Kaspersky, but I suppose it's better the heuristics engine is working a bit too well than a bit less well.

I was only skim reading thier fourms, its seems to be performace issue as in brining PCs to thier knees, some have it some don't.

Interesting. I've seen nothing like that, so hopefully it's not too widespread.

it hopfully will be sorted out soon with the first cirital fix, not sure if the older build will be updated to it or if the user would have to update it manul

Free ones aren't as good, that's why. Why use photoshop when you can download paint.net?

surely it would be why pay for photoshop when you can use paint for free. same question but different reasoning behind it...

interestingly enough, MSE scored the same as kapersky in the last last comparatives test (may '10). MSE is free.....

anyway, this isnt norton we're talking about, its kapersky and it's cheap as chips. From what ive seen it isnt any better than the best free scanners, but for £17 it's hard to get excited either way :)

I've had reliability issues with MSE, and I think it's oversimplified. Detection might be OK, but Kaspersky has so many more features, and for around a tenner. I think that's a good deal if you take security seriously.

My point about paint.net or paint (whatever) is that you can do similar things as photoshop, but you miss out on a lot of features. Depends what you need really, the same applies for the AV. If you're not a heavy browser/downloader and you don't swap stuff with mates via USB/disc etc and anything that increases infection, sure, a free one might get you by. I use MSE on my HTPC, but for my main rig I want better, especially when it's so cheap.

Does anyone actually buy AV these days?

Yes, I bought Kaspersky 2010 when it was a similar price a while back and have been very pleased.

As pointed out, the menus arent particularly intuitive (translated from Russian I believe) so customising it can be a bit of effort but it is very do-able.

Kills PCs
Cripples them
Not sure if archive scanning was ever sorted, they went all hush on that after 2 years of failing

Kaspersky products are generally excelletn after CF2 is released, CF1 helps but CF2 and they are usually gold.

Might be an idea to buy 2010, and run with it, then after 2011 hits CF2, use the free upgrade pathways they all and move over to it.

Its a licence, it always was that way with them, you buy licence, you entitled to product, unless that has changed for 2011?

well photoshop probably has extra features than paint.net...(never used paint.net ..so i dunno)

AV's? well....both retail and free have the same things really.....maybe the difference is regular updates?...i guess....but that isnt really a big issue ....since free AV's do that too...

The internet security has a fully customisable firewall, av has advanced heuristics and very regular updates, there are extras like parental control and even a on screen keyboard. The sandbox features are also useful. Don't take my word for it though, look here. It has a whole host more options and features than the basic MSE.
