Right I have had an old MS keyboard for years and now I want to change it, but I have no idea what I want, could someone give me some pointers as to which is best for gaming and which is best for general typing on, I currently use my PC for everything apart from gaming, but soon I want to get some new games and start playing them again :)

Hope someone can help

Regards
Dan

Unfortunately keyboards are all subjective - it's whatever feels "right" to you!

A lot of people will recommend mechanical keyboards - they have a nice feel to them, do everything you could ask them to etc. Worth trying one out if you can at a retailer (if any stock any mechanicals) as they aren't for everyone. They also (usually) come with a premium over your standard membrane keyboard.

I'm still sat here using an old Logitech media keyboard that cost me £8 and can't complain! Came from a "gaming" Saitek Eclipse II before this too!

Hi, yes I think I will have to try them out in the shop, I have noticed that there are different ones, black switch and red switch? Whats the differance?

I bought the Logitech K750 Solar Powered keyboard yesterday and absolutely love it. Low profile clicky sounding keys. Looks very sleek and elegant and it's solar powered meaning no batteries needed - ever! I think the range is about 3 m from the USB chip as well though I haven't tested that yet. Great keyboard :)

Thank you smr, I will look at those, so far I think I am right in saying that the brown and blue keys will suite me best as those are best for typing and gaming.

I have not tried the modern mechanical keyboards, but loved the feel of the old IBM keyboard where they sat in a corner had where I worked ages.
Are the new ones like that..:-) for those who have evperienced them?

The IBM "Model M" Keyboard used a buckling spring type switch that gave both tactile feedback and an audible click, so the closest thing to it is going to be the cherry MX Blue keyswitch. My QPAD MK 80 has MX Blues and I use it for typing and gaming and I can't fault it at all.

is there a wireless version ?

I'm also looking for a keyboard, I have tested black and blue mechanical keyboards, I didn't really like the clicking of the blue switches so at the moment I'm considering brown switches. Really tempted by the Ducky Shine II - Blue LED's with brown switches but it's proving difficult to source one in the UK. I wished OcUK would increase their range of keyboards :(

I like the look of the Roccat Valo v2 at £39 but I've read some really good reviews and some really bad ones so I'm not sure what to do.

As previously said it is all down to personal taste. I have had many keyboards and prefer mechanical for games and a Microsoft curved ergonomic one for typing. I also prefer different mice for gaming (RAT9) and work (part of the Microsoft 5000 desktop with the keyboard). Since I use different machines for work and home this is not a problem.
