New kitchen, mistake not to get built-in bin storage?

Long story short in our kitchen design we originally had a pull-out drawer for bins under our sink. However the sink is next to a corner unit where we'd planned to put our hot water tap boiler. Unfortunately this now looks like it'd be too fiddly to get to, changing filters etc. so we're removing the under-sink drawer so the tap boiler will go there. Nice and easy. However this leaves us without anywhere particular for the bin and recycling bin. We always only had a tiny, tiny bin (think miniature bathroom size) because most of our rubbish generated is actually recycling. But it's a small house and our big bins (inc. recycling) are only two steps outside the front door. So thinking a small bin under the sink will suffice (maybe something attached to the door?), and nothing for recycling (just take it straight out). Thoughts?

I really liked the idea of a pull-out drawer for bins. Aaaand now I've written this thread I've just realised I've forgotten entirely about the food caddy. We always just used to have that under the sink and it came out when cooking. Hmn... Would a 600mm wide cupboard door by wide enough for a food caddy and tiny bin to hook on?

Had to read it about 5 times but I think you're asking will a hot water tap boiler, bin and food caddy all fit in a 600 wide cupboard. Sounds very tight to me and will entirely depend on the spec/size of each unit.

The 3L boilers are fairly small and can be tucked right at the back, so the issue is likely whether you can fit the bin next to the caddy. Not sure I'd really want all that mess under the sink though.

@Abyss no sorry I am a sick, gibbering wreck today so not surprised it didn't make sense. TLDR, in our new kitchen design we originally had a built-in pull out drawer for bins etc. But have now removed it. Is it a mistake to not have a fancy pull-out drawer for bins? It's a small kitchen and we definitely don't want a big freestanding bin out in the open :o

You need somewhere to put the bin where it is conveniently placed for use, but you won't trip over it by accident. Those are the criteria. It is more convenient to not have a bin hidden away, so you don't have to keep opening the drawer/cupboard, but then you need to make sure you won't trip over it, so you need an alcove or nook, or put it at the end of the worktop units, as long as it is not blocking a walking route.

Pedal bins are good as it saves having to touch the bin, but then you need one tall enough so you don't have to stoop down.

Yuppy bin to go with yuppy kitchen?
I remember walking round John Lewis with my friend and his wife, he couldn't believe she wanted to spend £200+ on a bin :p

@radderfire honestly our actual rubbish bin does not get used that often at all. 90% of waste is recycling so it goes in that, or food waste when we're cooking. It'd be helpful to have a recycling bin out, but I don't think it'd be pleasant having a food waste bin out all the time. That's best hidden away, and only out for when being used.

So to answer your question then you do need a concealed bin somewhere, and it is a mistake not to have a pull-out drawer or something similar.

I would also say it is best to have a receptacle for recycling as well so you don't have to go out everytime. I use a big cardboard box from Lidl but you may be more sophisticated than me :)

Spare dinner tray as recycled box checking in (y)

simplehuman bins are good - had one for a few years now - Personally wouldn't bother with "bins inside cupboards/pullouts etc" - just another cupboard to keep clean/lift stuff out of.

Also had a warranty situation with previous simplehuman bin - foot pedal broke - they asked for a picture, I sent it, they emailed back an apology and dispatched a new "upgraded" bin as the one we had wasn't in stock... Excellent customer service.

Aye the simple human bin bags they do are very good too. Yes they don't have tesco value pricing, but it won't rip on the way to take it out and they're pretty indestructible.

Totally personal preference of course but for me, yes I'd want a bin hidden away. In fact my approach is to hide every possible thing away as the kitchen tends to just look cleaner/tidier and less cluttered. I'd even go with quite a small bin to accommodate this as the more often you take the bins out, the less likely bad smells stick around and what not. Depends on layout and space I guess.
We have one that pulls out on a purpose bin cupboard/draw thing on rails, and then it's two bins back to back, so we put refuse in one and recycling in the other.

We've an 800wide sink unit. A hot tap. I think the intergrated bin option cost about 2grand. We went for a normal unit and spent < £20 on two bins that are in the unit.

Yeah I wouldn't pay 2K for an integrated bin. I would just order a cupboard front and make something myself in the standard 600mm space.

Yeah don't do what we did and plan the whole kitchen and then have no where to have a bin... we were going to have 2 small ones like what you were planning by the sounds of it in the cupboard under the sink but they didn't fit properly and would have been uselessly tiny in reality. So now our bin is in the utility room next door which in hindsight is bloody stupid.

Curver oblong pedal bin bought when simplehuman was just a twinkle in humans eye,
as said, not in a cupboard, otherwise you contaminate surfaces getting to it ... unless they now have a car-boot type wave your foot in the toe-kick area option ?? (some decent tech in the kitchen versus a BT appliance)
wouldn't mind having a combo one with a vegetable peelings/green-bin section to scrape chopping board into though.

I wouldn’t design another kitchen without an integrated bin.

Even though my wife hates them, I picked my battle on this one after designing the kitchen in our old house without one. I _despise_ visible bins. They get in the way and there’s no way to make them look good.

Now I have a dual pull out one, I managed to get a 450mm cabinet in and with that it has a split for general rubbish and recycling - think they’re about 30-35l each so fairly small but I’d not go back…!

Yeah we weren't even getting the integrated bins because they were so pricey. We were literally getting the bottom drawer and were going to put our own bins on it.

The food bin always comes out straight away when I'm prepping to cook. Gas on, food bin out, lid open, knife sharpened (*honed actually  ) let's rock :p

Our actual rubbish bin was so small we'd just use carrier bags as the bin bag and they'd not even get full in a fortnight before they next go out! How do you guys generate so much rubbish for landfill or are you just awful humans and don't recycle?

Speaking as someone who has one… I would NEVER do it again! Too small, getting emptied every day pretty much (including recycling!) I’d just find some good bins to fit in a unit now rather than build them in… you basically need to 500/500mm cabinets I reckon. One for bone recyclable and one for recyclable. At least that’s what I’ll do when I put the next one in…

I really regret them!!
