well after my current 1.2ghz lappy which i have had for about 2-3 years now started acting up, decided to get a new one as much as i would like to get a custom job from ocuk i am having to get it of the highstreet from the purple shirted brigade :( been looking on the website and the toshiba x300 has taken my fancy but am just wondering what the 9700m gts graphics card is like for gaming, the 17inch screen can only do 1440 res but i guess thats a good thing with the graphics cant cope, are there any owners of the x300 out there as i would really like to know what its like for gaming

Its certainly among the better gfx cards out there....this has a lot of details for you.

http://www.notebookcheck.net/NVIDIA-GeForce-9700M-GTS.9899.0.html

And i would say the 1440 res is just about perfect for that class of gfx.

If you really can lower yourself to buying from the 'idiots in purple' and it has a decent dual core CPU, id go for it.
as i think thats just about the best gfx card you find in any laptop on the high street.

The real top end mobile gfx laptops tend to be internet specialist only...unfortunately.

well bugger me went to look at all the main high street shops around me and not one of them had a decent gpu in them every one was was a crappy inter job, think am going to be better of saving up a grand and then getting either a custom job or a dell xps 1530 or better

thing is am not just looking at the 1530 now a grand is just a starting block for me as the lappy that i do get will be replacing my desktop ;)

I am also looking for a new lappy, ~£1000.
Currently looking at the Asus G50V-A1. It has a 2.53GHz Core 2 Duo, 4 GB RAM, and a 9700M GT.
It's going for around about £1000 on an auction site, and seems to be the cheapest laptop in the class.

Any thoughts?

I'd say have a look at the OcUK custom builds, i bought one for about £100 more and it's a lovely machine. I have it with 2.4ghz, 4gig ram, 320gig 7200rpm hard drive and 9800gts and it plays every game i've thrown at it fine.

Also you get 2 years warranty with OcUK themselves, which is a big big bonus.

I was looking into a Ultima Mobile, with the same specs as yours.
How is the 9800m GTS, compared to the 9700M GT. I ask this because I have heard they are close, performance wise.

Ahh, yes.
Indeed it looks that way.
Looks like I might pick up an Ultima after-all.

Thanks for the info!

If you do you'll be happy with it, i just put vista x64 on mine and things running just as good as xp 32bit.

I find myself gaming on it more than my main pc which is similar and needs an upgrade soon. I just love the mobility of it.

I'll definitely want to use the full 4GB of RAM, and I only have a 32-bit version of Vista Business. However, I should be able to get a 64-bit version from the MSAA. :D

Yeah, I also love the mobility of gaming on a laptop. They might not be as powerful as a desktop, but the fact that you can take that gaming experience anywhere with you overwhelms this drawback.
