My wife has decided that she wants a new laptop, it's only got to cope with Office and the internet and ideas.

I want to spend between £300 and £400, what the best option.

The only thing she really wants is a fast boot time.

At this price range, probably a Dell. If you mean boot time on first switching on the laptop, Vista isn't particularly fast I'm afraid, even on a well-specced laptop.

Something from the Dell Inspiron range should do, and they even come in pink. Try and get 2GB memory (might stretch your budget) if you're getting Vista and go for as fast a processor as you can afford obviously (T5000+). Personally I think it's worth stretching the budget a bit for the performance, but I would wouldn't I. The extra £100 or so is worth it when you think of life's other expenses.

Hope this helps.

Choosing XP instead of Vista is probably the best way to get a quick startup. XP starts up much quicker and is ready to use straight away. Quick CPU, extra ram, quick drive will also make a difference too but they will depend on your budget and I'm not sure it's worth spending a lot for those intended uses. XP also copes with lower system specs better. Agree about a Dell.
