new laptop memory problem

I have a Dell Precision M6500 workstation (Gray). It says it supports DDR 3 1333MHz.

I ordered some memory from crucial (2x8GB) which got here today.
The laptop supports up to 16GB.

I placed in the memory, and switched it on. I got the Dell screen but then the system froze completely. cannot press del/f2/space bar. nothing happens. Caps lock light does not even come on when I press the key.

Took out the memory and placed the old one back in - works fine obviously.

So I have requested a lower speed from crucial which they are doing. (also the crucial site shows that the memory I ordered is supported on the laptop which is why I ordered it)

question: what could be the reason for the laptop acting like that with this new memory?
would it harm the system at all when it freezes like that?

There has not been a BIOS update in over a year but it is the latest.

as for putting in one of the slots only, is a good question. I did not try that! Do you happen to know which slot should be the first one to put in the memory? I know some motherboards are configured to have memory slots filled in the right order/bank.

C&D is the one which has the memory slots. did not see the one under the keyboard and most likely it is not in use since the system has 4GB in total (2x2GB) as default

Its quad core.
In the system there is only 4GB....2x2GB in slots c and d.
Are you saying it supports Only 2GB per slot?
If so why are crucial offering differently?

I've returned them now for a refund.
