New Laptop Recommendation

Hi guys,

For the last 5 years I've been using a LG X120 for my laptop needs. I got it for $300CAD and used it for traveling. It was fine for light Internet browsing/emailing and watching the occasional video/TV program.

I sense now though that it is definitely coming to the end of it's life. The battery no longer holds any charge so needs to be plugged in all the time, it gets so hot I fear the plastic will melt and half the keys randomly stop working sometimes. On top of this I now need a laptop for work and working on a 10" screen, as you can imagine, is awful.

Work are going to be giving me some money toward a new laptop so I was looking to spend around £600 (happy to go a bit higher if the performance warrants it, or lower if you think spending this much is overkill for what I need).

I need it to meet the following criteria:

- Able to play 1080p video and will be used for basic video editing. My partner recently bought me a GoPro for my birthday and I'd like to start using it soon.
- Needs to be reasonably sleek design/light. I'm going to be travelling a lot in the next 6 months with work so will be carrying it a lot.
- Decent size screen as to restrict scrolling as much as possible.
- Needs to run as cool as possible. Will be living in Okinawa for some time and it gets bloody hot so don't want to add to the heat too much!
- No serious gaming as I don't really play games when traveling. Perhaps playing some light games (Age of Empires etc) could be fun, but I can't imagine playing anything graphically demanding. I have a desktop at home that can be used for this.
- Has to be available in Japan as this is where I live. Hopefully things may even be a little cheaper here.
- Run windows.

I don't really have any loyalty to one particular brand, just looking for some advice seeing as you can find equally bad/good reviews for any manufacturer on the Internet.

Thanks in advance for your help and let me know if you need any more info.

Haha, I am tempted by a Macbook, but am too set in my ways with windows to actually go for one.

That first recommendation was great, although getting it here in Japan seems like it could be a problem.

The Samsung Book 9 series seems good, but then I looked at the price. Seems like it could be difficult to get a nice slim laptop with a dedicated GPU for the price I want.
