Hello all,

As per the title I am looking at a new laptop 800 - 900 but might stretch a little more if a good deal is to be had.

Usage is mostly work, streaming, Internet and Football Manager (New one due out next month), Skyrim & total war games.

Any pointers tips etc.

How do the AMD's compaire to the Intel systems.

Found a legion y530 (15.6"FHD IPS AntiGlare LED Backlight 1920x1080, I7-8750H, 16GB PC4-21300 DDR4 SODIMM SODIMM 2666MHz RAM, 1TB 7200 +16GB SSD M.2, NVIDIA GTX1050Ti GDDR5 4G 4GB GDDR5) for 900. But am worried about heat from the I7 and the hard drive not being SSD?

This was another option but over budget.

Any pointers welcome.

The Acer Nitro 5 can be had for £649 if you are considering a 1050 graphics card. No sense in spending more than this on a 1050/1050TI equipped one now.

The Intel version is notably better than AMD with RX560X at this level.

ACER Nitro 5 AN515-52 15.6" Intel® Core™ i5 GTX 1050 Gaming Laptop - 256 GB SSD @£649

At your budget, you should be looking at 1660/1660TI equipped laptops or the odd bargain 2060 that appears.

AN515-54 is the Nitro 5 that has the GTX1660 in for £899

NH.Q5BEK.008 is the Nitro 5 that has the 1660TI in and is the best choice at £929.

I am quite a fan of the Nitro this year. Great IPS screens, nice design, battery life and design.

I am now down to two by the looks of it

Acer Nitro 5 - NH.Q5BEK.008 @930
  • intel Core i5-9300H Quad-Core Processor
  • 15.6" Full HD IPS Anti-Glare Screen
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64-bit
  • 8GB DDR4 RAM
  • 128GB M.2 NVMe SSD + 1TB HDD
  • Dedicated GeForce GTX 1660Ti 6GB Graphics
or

ASUS ROG Strix G531GU-AL315T @999

  • Intel Core i5-9300H Quad-Core Processor
  • 15.6" Full HD IPS 120Hz Screen
  • Microsoft Windows 10 Home 64bit
  • 16GB DDR4 2666MHz RAM
  • 512GB PCIe NVMe SSD
  • Dedicated GeForce GTX 1660Ti 6GB Graphics
Which would you go for? These are both stretching my budget to the max.

Just plan what specs you "really" need and try not to overspend. I was able to play skyrim on a dell inspiron 1520

I've been playing WoW and Destiny 2 on a 1050Ti in an Acer Helios 300. It's a great combination, especially with my 144hz screen.

Just make sure you do your research into them as many have poor thermals.
There have been a couple I have ordered, Then discovered it was a version with very poor thermals so subsequently cancelled my order.

Yeah just seem to be going around in circles as cooling has always been at the back of my mind. Orginally I wanted an HP Omen and was gonna bust my budget but all I read about those is overheating issues (unless the 2019 models have become radically better?)

Any other ideas people?? Decent spec laptop that has ok thermals? I am pulling my hair out lol

I believe the 2019 has better thermals than the 2017/2018 version.
I managed to get an Asus GL502VS which has an i7-7700HQ, 500GB NVME drive, 1TB HDD, GTX1070 8GB gpu and 16GB RAM for around the £850 mark with a years warranty.

Let us know the performance thermals etc. I was pulling my hair out deciding which one to go for as well and just ended going a bit crazy and got the acer Helios 300 (2019) with the i7 9750 and 1660ti. I already think it is runs hot but it is one of the better ones for thermals and doesn’t throttle any where near as much as others

Will do.

Its annoying, I kept just going round and round in circles. For my budget (1000) I dont think I could tick all boxes, so went I5 hopefully that will keep it cooler.

Nice choice, what sort of temps are you getting?

Cpu goes up to about 89-90 but cpu stays on around 3988mhz on average. I do have an overclocker button which will make the fans run faster and louder but then it’s too loud
