Hi guys I am looking to buy a new laptop next week

I had my heart set on the MSI GP62 6QF for £799 but after looking around and realising I'll only be using it for seldom gaming I'm not sure any more

I stumbled across this DELL Inspiron 15 7000 15.6" Laptop for £799

The dell does appear to have a lot more going for it. IPS display, double SSD size, better i7 (I think?!?), double ram size. Dell also has a lot longer battery and is lighter.

I will be doing a lot more photo and video editing then I will gaming, So maybe the Dell is best for me?

Here are the specs

The specs on the manufactures websites are not detailed enough

Anyone know if the Dell's SSD will be the newer M2 type (like the MSI one)

Think I'll go with the MSI , cpu will probably feel quicker due to the quad core, better graphics, the extra 1tb drive plus a DVD-rw drive

Last Dell I got was poorly built

putting the other point of view - how much of the video editing software can genuinely use four cores ?
would have thought the IPS display benefits for photo editing and additional ram/ssd size would more than compensate for four cores.
(albeit) GL62 notebook check review is not so complimentary about the msi screen.
With some video editing and web browising at this price point 8GB ram maybe limiting. Could add a usb disk to dell if needed too ?

So the dell would be your choice then? It's a difficult decision for me

can you try them out in a shop to see the displays. keyboard, build quality ?

- am maybe biassed, have had reliable latitude Dells at home and work and have the impression that Dell service under guarantee is good (benefit from their wide business use) but maybe msi service is equally good

I've seen them both they're obviously very different machines

The sales man just said no one buys the Dell to play games on

looks like there is the inspiron 15 gaming too for same price, like msi, except it has 256GB ssd, no hdd , i5 4 core, and 4gb version of same 960m - so nearly becomes a manufacturer choice, if you want a gaming biassed machine.

MSI just edges the dell . The msi is quad core the dell is dual core . the 6700 is a little bit better for what you need . newer dont mean better .

http://www.cpu-monkey.com/en/compare_cpu-intel_core_i7_7500u-652-vs-intel_core_i7_6700hq-573

agreed stats wise, but neither of these machines are really a gaming pc, yes you can play some basic games but it's not going to play anything at high end with high settings.

also if your rendering videos laptops are sooo slow for this, I have the GT72 with 980m and i7 /16gb ram etc and sony vegas takes ages to render anything compared to a lesser desktop spec.

I'm if these are closely matched specs, same price, I would go with the Dell, better customer service you know if anything goes wrong they will sort it. MSI on the other hand.... just check out the MXM upgrade thread... lol.

Thanks for all replies

I went back had a second look at the MSI and after seeing the dells screen there was no way I could buy the MSI

Got the Dell now and I'm happy with it so far just install all my stuff

I'm in a similar scenario choosing between MSI/Dell, MSI you seem to get more for your money so why choose the Dell, Danny? What was it about the screen? I'd love a 4k screen for under £1k!

The MSI has a horrible screen and MSI are known for bad customer service/warranty returns. MSI will be great if your primary use is gaming

But I do more photo/video editing so I chose the Dell. Its also a newer laptop, It has one of the nicest laptop keyboards i've ever used. Much better then my 2015 Macbook Pro

Cheers.

I'm looking at Inspiron 15-7000 Gaming Series, Intel® Core™ i7, 16Gb RAM, 1Tb Hard Drive & 128Gb SSD, 15.6 inch Full HD Laptop with 4Gb Nvidia GTX960M Graphics

It looks different to yours though although they seem identical spec...
