So i picked up a laptop from Currys yesterday, windows 8 and proceeded to install the 80-odd updates which then failed now it is now stuck on Failure configuring windows updates reverting changes...since last night.

Edit. Just been on Asus for recovery info which i'll try.

Method One
Using the Recovery Partition(on selected models)
1. Press < F9 > during bootup.
2. Press [Enter] to select Windows Setup [EMS Enabled].
3. Select the language you want to recover and click Next.
4. Read the ASUS Preload Wizard messages and click Next.
5. Select a partition option and click Next. Partition options:
Recover Windows to first partition only.
This option deletes only the first partition and allows you to keep other partitions, and to create a new system partition as drive "C".
Recover Windows to entire HD.
This option deletes all partitions from your hard disk drive and creates a new system partition as drive "C".
Recover Windows to entire HD with two partitions.
This option deletes all partitions from your hard drive and creates two new partitions "C" (25%) and "D" (75%).
6. Follow the onscreen instructions to complete the recovery process.

Updates have failed again and got stuck in a loop on reverting changes, F9 to get a system restore Then i ran a fix

Thinking the problem was now done i went on to install the 99 updates again it failed.

System restore again then ran Sfc/ scannow it found corrupt files.

currently running "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" command.

ive had the laptop since 4th of august from Curry's 21 days has passed so i don't think i can take it back if it's a OS issue I'd happily format it but would that ruin the hardware guarantee.

Hardware guarantee?

If that's the case, take an image of the current install. Keep it for a year on an external drive.

In the mean time, fresh install.

First thing I do with any shop bought machine is a fresh install. They put so much junk on them, I think they want them to fail

This is quite a common problem with Windows 8.

The way I get around it is by sorting the updates by size, then select to install only the largest 15-20 updates.

Don't know why but it also installs the remaining updates even though they weren't selected.

This works for me every time.

Had the same issue with a factory reset of my dad's win8 laptop. Hit the reverting changes screen but each time (took a while) it would complete and boot to windows eventually and I could proceed with updates. It gradually made it through each time displaying fewer than before. Seems like it installs in the wrong order or something. Didn't work however for mine, and would stall on the screen, luckily I had a recentish image :/ A pain in the arse indeed.
