I'm considering getting a new laptop and will want to run ubuntu linux on it, but I hate the idea that if I buy one new, I'm basically paying Microsoft for something I'm just going to be deleting as soon as I get it so is there any way I can buy a laptop from OCUK without an OS or could I get a partial refund from OCUK upon providing proof that I rejected the Microsoft EULA agreement?

Won't be needing windows for what I need so no point keeping it just in case, and there would always be the option of choosing to buy windows which would at least be my choice. It's kind of on principle as much as being a tight arse :D why should we be forced to pay window$ tax.

Chromebook?

But then your limited to specs. I wouldn't know, you go down to a local computer store and most of them don't know what a Hard Drive does.
So mergh, your best calling up OCUK or asking their Customer Service, or maybe a don could just magically appear here with an answer.

No, OP thinks it's ironic. It stopped being ironic/funny in about 1995.

Anyhoo, Forum Dons don't necessarily work for OcUK. Try the Contact Us bit of the main website.

Chromebook looks very interesting thank's for that suggestion imb4tman, unfortunately though as Hyburnate says it's very limiting on spec, places that sell it, and brands to choose from, early days though I guess. I want some hdd space to store some music, TV series, and films, I've had a quick look and can't even find a mention that it has a hdd :D the idea seems very much to be that everything is stored on the web, so no good for me with my 1.5 meg 'broadband' :(

"If it was a joke, would it be funny?" $ is to make a point :) /whatever :D

a completely incorrect point.

I imagine the difference in price is so small it's hardly worth bothering with. I remember when the eePC was launched, the price of the linux version with practically the same although i remember the linux version having a slightly bigger hard drive. Might be cheaper if you can find some hardware without any OS but really...for the sake of a few quid?

The price of putting ubuntu on myself is £0 to me. I'm prepared to accept that microsoft probably do a good deal on windows for the big name brands compared to the cost of an OEM copy, but they're not going to give it away. I'd like to get back on track with how I might get a laptop and not spend any amount of money however large or small on windows. I'm not asking something than has never been done before, in microsoft's EULA it actually says you should return the product for a refund if you do not accept the agreement, there are several reports of people successfully getting refunds for windows on websites and blogs, I just want to be sure I won't have a problem doing so with OCUK as many places have never heard of this before. I'm looking for something minimum 14" maximum 17" so that's all the little 7-10" jobs that come with linux out :(

Im pretty sure you will need windows at some point. Just dual boot or use a separate hard drive. You'd honestly save about £20 to "opt out". It sounds like so much effort just to stick the middle finger to microsoft.

yeah your not kidding it's effort, it really shouldn't be, but it always will be if no one complains. I can see I came to the wrong place if I wanted any support on that front though :D I just want to watch stuff when I'm away from home and web brows, neither of which require windows at all. I honestly can't think of a single thing I've not been able to do in ubuntu so dual booting would just be a waste of a bit of disk space (and money because won't get any back) thanks for your suggestions all the same guys :)

tigerstyle, thank's for that suggestion I'll look into it :)
