looking for a laptop that fits this:

2.1 kg or less
no wider than 30 cm
drive 80 gig+

the rest is flexible....if vista then must be premium or ultimate with 2 gig ram
if xp then only need 1 gig
less than £1000

looked at samsung q35 (with 1.5 gig ram)..very cute but i wonder if 12 inch screen is just too small for office applications?

You are unlikely to find a 14.1" laptop that is less than 2.1kg, they are 2.2Kg minimum, so your going to be stuck with 12".

yup ive narrowed it down to the samsung x11 and x35 and the Sony VAIO SZ4MN

The sony is expensive but it ticks every box.

Sony VAIO SZ4MN/B - Core 2 Duo T5600 1.83 GHz - 13.3" TFT
Dimensions (WxDxH) 23.4 cm x 31.5 cm x 3.3 cm
Weight 1.7 kg

2 gig ram

nothing can match it for size, weight and power. Am i missing something?

There are lots of laptops under 1.7Kg and are a smaller size but they usually cost more and have lower specs.

The Sony VAIO TX5XN/B for example,

27.2cm x 19.5cm x 2.1cm
11.1 in Tft
1.3 kg

How about a MacBook? Its only just over 30cm wide and weighs about 2.3Kg. I ran Vista RC2 on mine with 2GB RAM and it ran pretty damn fast, even aero worked perfectly. If you know a student you can save about £120 on it too.

People criticise MacBooks but it's hard to find a normal PC laptop with all of the features for the same price. I don't know of any that offer Core 2 Duo, 802.11b/g/n, VGA camera, integrated bluetooth, firewire, dvi cheaper than a MacBook.

Zepto and hp have most those features for a lot less money and even include a graphics card.

While they may be stylish, the macbook is heavy for a 13.3" model, 2.36Kg 2.75cm x 32.5cm x 22.7 cm, not ideal for ultra portable.

so while yes you can get notebooks under 1.7 kg...the screens are too small for me....12 inch is a real minimum and 13.3 on the sony much better...and while you guys suggest other makes there isnt one that can compete with the dimensions of the sony given its screen size and guts...i wish there was one....

You're right the Sony is the best option if weight is a real issue, very good spec for the size and weight. If you don’t mind going slightly heavier (2.3 kg) there is also the Sony VGNC2Z.

I have been looking at the Sony VGNC2Z for a while now and although everyone keeps saying that Vaio’s are overpriced I can't find a cheaper sub 15 inch laptop with a matching spec.
