Hi
I am looking to buy a laptop around £500. I take a lot of photos for research and id (grey seals), so it would be for downloading photos from a DSLR for viewing, cropping and saving. Is 8 GB RAM and 256 storage suitable.
Thank you

8GB of RAM will be adequate.

256GB of storage would do to begin with, although with lots of photos you would eventually fill it up. At least 500GB would be better. However, you can always buy an external storage device later if budget is limited.

I'd try and get the largest screen possible too, deffo worth spending more on, it's one of those things that you are stuck with after you buy it, I'd definately go bigger too, when I was using my old desktop for my camera photos it would fill up 500gb of x2 250 gb raid storage very fast, but I was a take a lot of photos, and choose the best one kinda guy, if you are setting up more single shot photos, maybe not so much of an issue...
.. like radder says, you could pick up some external storage later on

Keep an eye open for laptops with dual M.2 slots or M.2 and a 2.5” SATA bay

That’ll be handy down the line if you want to add more capacity.

I have a laptop with an M.2 and 2.5” bay and I upgraded it with a 2tb M.2 drive and 1tb 2.5” SSD drive.

I put the old M.2 SSD in an 10gbs usb external enclosure and use it to transfer files between computers.

Whatever you buy, make sure that you can upgrade the RAM and SSD in the future.
