LG have just announced they will be releasing four new IPS monitos; 20-, 21.5-, 23- and 23-inches respectively.

Have to say they, do look pretty nice. I have been wanting to get a second IPS panel monitor for a while now. You guys reckon it would be worth my while holding out for a few weeks and seeing if any pricing/availability is announced, or should I just bite the bullet and get a U2410 which is what I've was intending to get?

None of the LG panels offer the same resolution or input port range as the U2410. I am also not sure if they say the same brilliant colour gamut. All in all it isn't like these LG monitors will be superior in any way to the U2410. They may look different and be more home-user oriented but the image quality will be worse if anything. :)

The LGs do look nice will be interesting too see the reviews though.

I would have thought since the lg being ips and led, it would have easily performed better then a standard dell u2410 ips panel or any other ips panel.

But even I recall its sometimes about the quality of the screen not the technology behind it always :)

Whats the actual difference (technically) between TN and IPS panels; I know TN are cheaper (lower image quality/colours etc..) but whats the technical reasons for it?

In short:

IPS offers far better colour and brightness stability, as well as better viewing angles. If you change your view angle with a TN panel, particularly if you shift up or down, the brightness and colours will shift dramatically (try it now - look at your monitor from below). This does not happen with IPS panels.

As for the technical reasons behind it, well it's not something you can summarise in just a few lines. There is plenty of information out there if you google for it. A good summary of different LCD technologies can be found on wikipedia.

...the main difference from TN panels, [is] that the crystal molecules move parallel to the panel plane instead of perpendicular to it. This change reduces the amount of light scattering in the matrix, which gives IPS its characteristic wide viewing angles and good color reproduction

Just to add LG has informed me that their LED-backlit IPS monitors should be available early in Q1 2011.
