New life into old rig.

Greetings,
I'm currently still gaming on my old water cooled [email protected], 4 gig of ram and a 6970. I think its about time I gave the system some love and upgraded it even though it is still more that happy with most games.

My biggest problem is trying to work out a real world performance upgrade without paying through the nose for it. I did look at something like a 2500k and clocking it but I'm not convinced I'd notice a huge amount of performance over what I have Vs the cost.

I'd really like to hear any advice as I've not been into PC upgrades for some time and am lagging behind terribly in current tech.

It depends on how much you are thinking of spending and can you use bits from your old rig like HDD's, optical drive etc. Pretty much any spec would be a big improvement over what you have now so it all comes down to cost.

PS - A 2500K is old tech you would be better off with Ivybridge assuming your budget would allow it.

If you are still happy with it then wait until Q2 for Haswell and the new socket 1150. Socket 1155 is a dead end now.

Happy to wait, just trying to get an idea of whats out there once more worth having.

I'm not in the ballpark for a top of the line setup, I've always gone middle of the road and overclocked to its limits.
The rest the machine is fairly reasonable, HDD's, SSD's, optical drives, case, PSU etc are all fairly new and capable. Its really the CPU, mainboard and ram that's the issues.

Not really that much of an issue, by the sounds of it you still have a pretty decent rig, gaming wise. Haswell will arrive in a few months, if I were in your shoes I'd be looking at that for my next upgrade. Well, I'm not in your shoes and actually that's what I'm doing anyway
